How often should I clean my new shield 9mm?

i tend to clean mine after each range visit; but unless i'm just in their for a half hour using just one of my 9's for quick practice, i tend to run 100-150 rounds thru a 9 and another 1-200 thru one of my .22's. So spending a little cleaning time after doesnt bother me at all.
May be a basic wipe down and boresnake or a bit more involved. I can say i definitely will clean my Shield every time even if just used for a bit, as its the ported model so it does get a bit dirtier than my others.

Clean it after you shoot it every time is my opinion. It is what I do because I like a clean gun. In my opinion a clean gun has less of a potential for malfunctions. And I think overall it is just better for the life of the firearm.

^This^ If you clean often, there's no need to use caustic bore cleaners or wire bore brushes.

Don't know about others...but I just got a new Shield 45 and I will clean and oil it after every firing....and once a month even if I don't fire it....Did the same with my Shield 9 and it looked and performed as good 2 years later as the day I bought it.......I believe in taking care of weapons weather they need it or not...

Just one opinion of many.....................

"Take care of the equipment and it will take care of you" as my late Dad taught me. A Navy veteran of WWII and Army Combat Veteran of Korean War (789th Field Artillery Battalion - 8" inch Howitzers).

Whether tools, cars, firearms, camping and fishing gear, etc. I always remember this when finishing a job or task.

You could just shoot it until it wont function any longer, then call up S&W and complain about their crummy guns being defective and send it back.

You wouldn't beleive how many "broken" guns I have fixed for people by simply giving them a good cleaning....they were just so filthy and gummed up with crud they wouldn't function!

Clean after every use. Spray cleaners , like gun scrubber, make cleaning the little nooks and crannies easy. Don't forget to shoot some spray lube into those places. A boresnake will take care of the barrel with no danger of damage from a rod....then a wipe down of the outside. You Done.

I only clean mine if I start having issues, which is very rare. I enjoy shooting much more than cleaning. I've gone thousands of rounds without cleaning my M&P's and only putting a dab of grease on the rails.

Is it safe to assume that you are talking about your range-only hand guns, and not ones you depend on for personal protection?

Yes. :) I don't even clean my comp guns that much. M&P's are so damn reliable, that they rarely need cleaning. But my SD guns, yes, they get cleaned often, although not as much as some in this thread.

Used to clean my m&ps after every range trip, now not so much. Now it's just when I feel like it. Sometimes it may be 3 or 4 range trips (500 rounds or so).

I think it prudent to clean your gun as well as yourself after every shooting session. There are a lot of nasty chemical compounds in GSR.

I clean mine after every range section, except when I used to help on a gun shop, I will fire a box before the shop opened wipe it down and holstered, carry guns get cleaned about 2 weeks I get a lot of lint in them.

Each time I go to the range, then again in a few days because some of the dirt/carbon comes up after cleaning. Then I lubricate every 60 days to keep the gun ready. I always clean carefully under the extractor hook to avoid function problems.
