How Rare ??

Hi Folks,

Just wondering how rare a Model 14-2 w/8 3/8" barrel is. I see quite a few references to later dash numbers w/the long snout but hardly anything on the dash-2 and earlier.

I have a bead on one in super condition w/original box/grips/docs. Lets say 97-98% for condition.

What type of value would be put on such a gun? Serial number puts it at 1962. Seems like these may be very dificult to find.

you don't see them everyday, but back in the 80s the police dept.that I worked at bought 50 model 10s from the army disposal unit and 6 of the 14s with 8 3/8 inch barrel. I got to pick them all out of giant bins, they had hundreds of the model 10s and at least 200 of the 14s I don't remember the dash number on the 14s. most of the guns appeared to be unfired.

Not "rare" from a collector's standpoint, but far less common than other barrel lengths.

The 8 3/8" barrel became available during 14-1 production in 1959, per SCSW, so -2s and later would be the more common variants.

I am afraid I have never understood the attraction of the longer barrels, especially on K-Frame models. I find them to have poor balance for normal handgun shooting positions, and definitely ungainly as a holster gun.

As for those who don't like the long tubes, try one with some 158 or 148 grain wad cutters at 25 yards at the range, you will then know why some of us like them.
