How Safe Are We?

Stories of first Al Quaeda and now Isis training for attacks on American civilian targets go back to before the invasion of Iraq. Before that, they surfacced in the first Gulf War and back during the 1980s terrorism scare.

Generally the fear of such is used as an excuse to push through additional internal security measures, like our old friend the Patriot act.

If there were a "terrorist" attack against a "soft target" in the United States, the sort of thing of no true political value or strategic importance, yet sure to enrage the population, my first suspicion would be to question who was actually behind such an attack and who would actually benefit from it.

We've seen this before....

I don't for an instant underestimate their tenacity. They are fanatics more than willing to die for their twisted cause. They remember the Crusades as if they were last year.

Yeah, we've seen this before. Japanese banzai attacks, kamikases and if we hadn't allowed Japan to keep their emperor we would have had to fight women, children and old men with sharp sticks for weapons.

With all due respect, our adversaries in this struggle do not think in terms of years or decades, but in terms of centuries and millennia. As you note, they remember the Crusades as if they were last year.

They are willing to work toward a goal they cannot accomplish in their lifetimes. When they claimed that their flag would fly over the White House, they were not talking about that happening any time soon; but they know if they keep chipping away at the fabric of our society, in a couple of centuries their dream will come true.

The challenge for the West is to be as focused on the long term as our enemies are, and to remain vigilant and strong.

Fine, I agree. Many of them do think in terms of decades or centuries, though some appear to be more impatient. So let's educate the young in the long term view and work to maintain national vigilance, power and a functional society--things every nation needs to do anyway.

My point was that the clamor about Isis or al Qaeda rampaging through our country in the foreseeable future is unrealistic and needlessly alarming to people who don't keep up with the realities of the world situation. I know people like that where I live, a seniors' apartment complex. Some are pretty twitchy. :)

If'n you start talking about Newtown (very suspicious) or somesuch, I'm gonna need my tinfoil hat. Only person who directly "profited" from that was one governor of a neighboring state. Hmmm. Joe

I have always been a history buff. Talk about a rough ride for the participants sometimes...One of those old dead, pre-indoor plumbing white guys once wrote that "History is a butcher's block"--was on to something. We're never very far from stuff going badly sidewise. Heck, there's been plenty of that even in our lifetimes.

It's nice to be nice, but as Ol' Clint put it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yid-CW-O9Qw

You are NEVER entirely safe from terrorism, and if you look back through history a bit more thoroughly, you will find that we never were.

this is not difficult to understand....threats from outside our borders are pale in comparison to the threat we face from inside....and the biggest obstacle for that is apathy......you can chose to be a willing victim...or chose to be a motivated survivor...............................pass the ammo please;)

Interesting we are not properly represented in Paris recently during the march against terrorism. The w h seems to think that topic is basically non existent in our country. Perhaps there's a reason why we have not been hit harder since 9-11 and we are a large soft target. Just a thought

Sigs Smiths and Colts

I feel very safe, if some ji haidest wacko wants to fight, but somehow their methods are to scare and surprise. They do not want a straight up fight, they want an afraid America that will bend to their agendas and will.

As far as safe concerning armed attacks like in France, I feel safe enough.

If you see me carrying a long gun while walking my dog at the park then you'll know I changed my mind.

In the early years of our country we, as a people, thought more about opportunity and less about safety. We were willing to trade safety for the opportunities to farm new land, build new cities and communities, and start and grow one's own business. Because of that entrepreneurial spirit this country prospered overall. Yes, there were failures and some died pursuing their dreams. However today we seem more focussed on creating a safe environment than creating a thriving environment.

I have to applaud the French who immediately held up signs supporting their right to free speech and marched in open defiance of the jihadists. The marchers took the chance and challenged the jihadists.

I agree. While I believe we need to have some safeties in place as a society those who are willing to sacrifice their freedoms and rights for what they believe is safety is ruining some of what was great about this country. Complete safety and security is an illusion and impossible. But, some in our government have been using fear and the carrot of safety to convince many into surrendering basic rights and freedoms.

Sadly, I have to agree with you. We have surrendered so many precious personal liberties in the name of "freedom" that I fear for the quality of life of our children and theirs in the near future. Worse still, the loss of such liberty has afforded us precious little in the way of real and meaningful personal and communal safety.

When you think about how little terror there has been in our country since 9/11, I'd say there are a lot of things the Feds do that we have no idea about. And they must be doing a pretty good job of it.

We are blessed to live in a country where so many patriots yielded their liberties - often their wealth - and too often, their very lives - to protect our fundamental rights. Included in those rights is our right to carry a firearm. It would seem to be dishonoring the memory of our warriors to not 'carry' a firearm - if you legally can and know how to use your firearm. It would seem that one life saved in a café, movie theater, or business shooting would make such diligence vilified.

I, too, have been waiting for the shoe to drop. I will remain pro-active - by carrying wherever I can - legally.

It's not just terrorists, it's everyday crime as well

Theives, robbers, etc

I live a few minutes from a town that statistically is rated the 5th dangerous town in my state

I started carrying two years ago and now I never go without it

Just yesterday, I was outside moving some small trees in my yard and piddling in my workshop, carrying my pistol

If I'm washing my truck, it's on me...........even in the "safety" of my own yard

Just to much evil in this world

Now, even more of my family members are getting their carry permits

As I drive into large populated areas I see people that speak different languages but cannot speak English. I see billboards that I cannot read or understand. I buy items that have assembly instructions that I can't read and have to look hard to find words in English. The employees in the drive thru of fast food restaurants have a hard time getting your order straight because they cannot understand or speak fluent English. The USA is being destroyed within because the immigrants and illegals are not coming here to be Americans. They are coming here and bringing their own culture and language with them.

REMEMBER:

THE US CONSTITUTION IS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH !!!

We can overcome and survive a Terrorist Attack in the USA but we cannot overcome the flood of uncontrolled masses coming across our borders.
