How to change the firing pin spring on a 6906

Ok, ok. The truth is that it is not real hard to do, but it can be difficult to describe.

First, have Brownell's on speed dial because odds are you'll lose a spring or two in this process :-)

Next, use a really small punch to depress and slide off the right hand safety lever from the slide mounted decocker/safety assembly. You put the punch in the little hole in the lever to depress the plunger and spring holding it in place, then slide the lever off. Make sure you keep control of the spring and plunger if they fall out.

Then, using a slightly larger punch, push on the back end of the firing spring through the decocker/safety assembly while simultaneously depressing the firing pin safety plunger from underneath the slide. Use the punch to push the pin forward and, while depressing the plunger, wiggle the safety/decocker assembly a little bit to the left and out of the slide far enough that the safety/decocker assembly captures the firing pin in it's full forward position and can remove the punch. Slowly wiggle the safety/decocker assembly out of the slide being careful to capture the firing pin if it springs free.

The firing pin and firing pin spring should now just fall out of the slide (while keeping the safety plunger depressed). Just put the new firing pin spring over the firing pin and reverse the process to get everything back together.

OK folks, I'm going from memory here. What did I miss?

Any more serious work on the slide requires removal of the rear sight (it holds a few springs in place), and without a sight removal/installation tool with a lot of 'grunt' I don't recommend this.

If you think you are going to do this more than once I really recommend the AGI gunsmithing DVD for S&W 3rd Gen pistols. It'll save you a lot of grief.

I think it has a trip to the gunsmith in it's future. This is more complicated than I thought. Thanks for your description.

Get the American Gunsmithing Institute video on S&W Auto Pistols, it really is not that compicated once you have seen it done. I have completely torn down my 4566 and reassembled it using that video.

Contact LSG Manufacturing in Commanche, TX., Mr. Frank Smith is a S&W warranty station and can do the change for you at S&W expense.

7shooter, I used the youtube video that was posted to change the springs (except the two under the rear sight base) in my 459, and it worked for me. And it's cheap too, free. I printed out an exploded view and then watched the video as I did it. I put the small parts into plastic bags and labeled them according to the item numbers on the exploded view. Also, if you get into a bind, there are knowledgable people here at S&W forum that will help you out with advice. I thought it was easy but fun because it did have some of a challenge to it. There is a pic below, and a link to the 6906 exploded view.

88tc,

Good job!

One thing is for certian - once you get a S&W 3rd Generation pistol apart you develop a whole lot of respect for S&W's ability to machine complex parts.
