How to check out a used S&W revolver?

A gift of a S&W Model 37 (no dash) from my stepfather has gotten me interested in S&W revolvers again after nearly 20 years without one.

I am wondering if there is a tutorial of how to check out used guns, as I am on a mission to hit every gun store and pawn shop in my region looking for S&W's.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

You need the book:
S&W Shop Manual by J Kuhnhausen

It covers everything.
