How to handle this situation - next time?

This happened to me a year ago, and I'm still thinking about it.

I was in Atlantic City at a concert in a casino, with my girlfriend. After the concert, around midnight, we decided it was time to head back to the hotel - a quick 6 or 7 minute taxi ride at best.

We walked out of the casino and there was a line of taxis about a block long. Maybe 35 or 40 of 'em in a row. Normal. We walked up to the first one in line, got it, told the driver we wanted to go to the Sheraton, and off we went. It was the same brand taxi as all the rest in the line, and there was a picture of the driver, with ID. I didn't give it any thought.

He turned onto a main street and headed in the correct direction. Then about a minute later, he takes a right and starts down a dark alley. Crosses a busy street and then continues down the dark alley. He's taking a short cut (I'm thinking to myself). He shoots down the alley, crossing street after street after street.

I look over at my GF and she's petrified. I look out the window and up ahead is a group of 4 or 5 men standing right next to the alley at a corner. This is Atlantic City and I know this is not good. Oh, and it's Jersey so no concealed weapons (at least for law-abiding citizens). By the time I put 2 + 2 together we're out on the main street and approaching the entrance to the Sheraton. We pull-in and he drops us off. He had nothing to say, didn't have change, and probably thought of me as an infidel (at least in hindsight).

It seemed fairly standard practice: take a short cut, hurry up and drop us off, and get back to the casino for (hopefully) a longer ride and a larger fare.

But... if he had stopped in that dark alley, perhaps next to the group of 4 or 5 men... it could have been very bad for the two of us.

Looking back, if he had stopped and they had tried to open the door I would have tried to jump into the front seat and take over the taxi. Yea, sure. He was about 350 pounds of fat and there wasn't much room up there, and the window opening between the front and back of the taxi was about 18 inches tops. He was a very unhappy middle eastern man with a knit scull cap. Looking back - this was not good right from the start.

What could I have done differently?

I'll be much more aware from now on, any time I get near a taxi. But I'm a business man and I use taxi's often. Everyone uses taxis and limos in casinoland.

How would you handle it next time?

"Where the hell are you going?" Would be a good start.
As for not having change I'd say "well I guess you're going to have to wait while I go get change from the front desk."

Well I could see where he was going, I could see the traffic going by, and the street lights at the end of the 5 or 6 (short) blocks of alley. He was running parallel to the main street as there was a lot of traffic on that street. At the time it's something I might have done too, it didn't seem like any big deal to me at the time.

But looking back it's easy to see how it could have been a very dangerous situation. I suppose anyone who gets into a taxi at midnight could face the same situation, I just wonder how I can increase my odds next time I need to use a taxi.

Maybe there is nothing else one can do to increase the odds in your favor. Yelling "where the hell are you going?" is not gonna do much to stop someone intent on harming or killing you. Maybe my calmness was interpreted by him as a sign I was prepared? A concealed handgun was not a practical option as it was NJ which has severe penalties - and the casino didn't allow weapons...

I should carry some sort of mass weapon and probably a knife just in case. And maybe take a limo instead of a taxi.

What else can you do?

Unless I had to fly somewhere and didn't check luggage, I always at least have a knife on me. No, it's not a gun but it's better than nothing.

Ultimately, unless you offer to pony up more money to get the driver to stay on main roads you're basically at his mercy.

Do you begin to see what is wrong with BEing in New Jersey? Same goes for New York. You really shouldn't have been there without a gun, and if you couldn't have a gun you shouldn't have been there.

That said, note how it ended. Infidel or not, he delivered you where he was supposed to, and may even have saved you some money or time.

Sounds like a good taxi driver. That's an extra level of service to shoot through all the alleys and such to save you going through normal traffic.

Anyway... Don't go to Atlantic City. Try Reno or something.

Hi:
Without being "Armed" and the Taxi Driver did stop for His Buds to rob you. Use your Girl Friend to fight a "Delaying Action" while you exit from the opposite Taxi door and escape to safety. However the Girl Friend might not want to date you again. But you would be safe.

You were probably safe in the alley. No self-respecting NJ taxi driver is going to let his fare get robbed before he gets to do it.

I agree with others who said the cab driver was doing a good job and you let paranoia take over and scare. Nothing to fear here except fear itself.

They don't want me in NJ and I'm just as happy for it . . . .

In my experience Atlanta and New York have the best taxi drivers for taking the quickest route possible from hotel to convention/meeting location, sometimes that route seems to include jumping curbs and such.:)

This is especially fun if you exit the hotel with a group of business associates necessitating more than one taxi and all going to the same location. The race is on!

Your first mistake was being in NJ. Your second mistake was not having your gun with you.

If he had stopped, you and your girl friend would probably be dead. Which would you rather do? Go to jail for shooting those thugs with an illegal gun or attend your own funeral? I'd opt for trying to get out of jail for shooting the thugs 'cause it's damn near impossible to get out of a grave. But that's just my opinion.

A perfect example of why I stay the hell out of taxi's. First their filthy, nasty, dirty and usually stink to high heaven. A towncar may be 25% more than a taxi but it's clean and the driver speaks a language I can understand.....ENGLISH !!!!!
