Have a 617 10 shot with a 4" barrel and would like to mount a red dot sight (Millet) to it. Looking for advice on a good way to do it (hardware, how to mount, etc.) and the best way to sight it in and maintain? Thanks.

Presuming the revolver has been drilled and tapped at the factory you can remove the adjustable rear sight and install a base from Jack Wiegand. This allows the use of a Weaver style ring to mount the scope.

I'm sure their are other choices but this system has worker well for my tastes!

I'll second Jack Weigand's mount:

* Here's how to determine if your 617 is D&T'd: YouTube - Smith Wesson Revolver Factory Drill Tap Identification Weigand

** Here's how you install the weigand mount: YouTube - Smith & Wesson K L N Frame Scope Mount Weigand Weaver Style

If your 617 is NOT D&T'd, then a Weaver 307s (s = silver) is an option. I used this mount to find my 617's favorite ammo, then sold it... It worked fine for me, I just prefer iron sights: Weaver Mount Scope Base S&W K, L Frame #307S Silver - MidwayUSA

Good Luck! :bthumb:

I used to own a 617 10 shot (bought new in about 2002). I unscrewed the adjustable rear sight and installed a Weigand SWHPMNTS/B mount in a few minutes. It did a fine job of mounting a holographic sight.

B Square makes a weaver style base in models that will fit a Drilled & Tapped or non-Drilled & Tapped. They are available in blue or silver. Here's a 17-4 with a Millet mounted on a B-Square base.

You'd sight it in like any other optics--shoot for groups, adjust the sights so that the groups hit where you want at the distance you want.

Maintenance isn't that difficult--make sure the glass is clean, and remember to turn off the dot when you're not using it.

An inexpensive mounting option for your 10-shot 617 (which should be factory drilled and tapped for a scope base) is the Weaver mount. At about $7 (from MidwayUSA), it's probably the least expensive option available, and since it only needs to contend with the light recoil of .22 it won't have any strength problems.

I use the Weigand mounts on my revolvers, even for the .22s. A bit more pricey at $30 apiece, but I haven't had any problem with them and they've been rock-solid.

Thanks for the comments everyone. My gun is pre-drilled and I am going to order a Wiegand mount.

Millett makes a all-steel dual dovetail mount that is the cleanest and stongest mount I've seen. Available in 1"& 30mm, Black & Nickle finish. I prefer the black on stainless guns as the nickle appears "yellow" compared to the stainless.

B-SQUARE SCOPE MOUNTS

I tried a B-Square mount on my 629 and my 686. I was very unhappy with the mount in that it did not come with the correct mounting screws and in one case the "T" nut device would not fit my 686. It took several calls to B-Square to try and get the correct screws and they could not provide a T nut of the proper dimensions to fit my 686. I have ordered another brand for my 617.
