I just received today a 38/44 Heavy Duty Model of 1950 (S 158425) which I think makes it around a 1956 birthday? It is in really nice shape, but the previous owner put (for lack of a better term) "highlights" in the barrel and frame markings.

I saw once in another post, someone asking how to remove these without damaging anything, but I can't seem to find the post again. So, if someone can let me know, I'd sure appreciate it.

Also, I am on a quest for appropriate grips for this, as it just has a set of Goodyears on it. If anyone has a suggestion for that, let me know. (I have place a WTB on the forum). Thanks all.

Jim

Try nail polish remover.

Yes. Acetone (i.e. nail polish remover). Pure acetone from the hardware store might be a little stronger than nail polish remover. I've used acetone with good results and it took just a few minutes. Finger nail polish may take more elbow grease. Use a small "acid" brush, a small horse hair paint brush, and dab the acetone onto the "highlighted" (painted) lettering and let it sit for 30-60 seconds and then use the bristles of the brush to work on the paint to loosen it in the lettering. If that doesn't work let the acetone sit a little longer and/or cut the bristles back to half their original length (makes them relatively stiffer) and repeat.

I hope so...as I just bought a set from a forum member!

I used Hoppes and a soft toothbrush on my "highlit" 1917.

Bottom line is it depends on what the white is? Some people just use chalk and it can be removed by any mild detergent and toothbrush. Others use paint, which paint remover will work quickly with the toothbrush. Their was also a product made for that purpose in the past, but it was most likely paint of some sort. I have never seen any damage to bluing caused by paint remover.

I second trying Hoppe's with a soft toothbrush. Worked for me, and cannot hurt. NOT for a nickeled gun though!

It must BE paint of some kind. I tried the Hoppes with a toothbrush...nothing. I tried the nail polish remover - almost nothing.

I've got some paint remover and will try that tomorrow.
