It seems these are two of the "big boys" on the block right now for the best self protection ammo. After doing some big time interent research (hmmm) I have seen videos, read ballistics, etc. So, here we go. Lets hear what you guys think.

Are they both just as good but just different companies?

I await the responses with giddy anticipation.

HST, Gold Dot, or Ranger-T, it really doesn't matter. They will all perform well if you place your shots well. Fail to do that and none of them will be adequate.

Personally, I chose what is available and functions with 100% reliability in my choice for protection. In my area, that happens to be Gold Dots or Ranger-T.

Both will work just fine, i have both and both shoot to point of aim and group well. Performance in jello is close, both will serve you well.

HST and Ranger-T are the two loads that I carry in my 1911, it mostly just depends on what is available when I need ammo, I'm sure both will work equally well.

OK, I'll kick sand on this one. I saw a study done comparing the two - with photos - and every test (wet newspaper, and a multiple-denim layer comparison) showed the HST opening up just like a flower, perfectly, every time. The Ranger-T was not as consistent; sometimes it only partly opened, and sometimes fragmented. A Google search might turn that up. They both penetrate great, and if you start with a big enough bore, who cares? That said, if you're ever attacked by wet newspaper, use the HST.

My opinion (worth exactly what you're paying for it) is that there is no magic bullet, that any handgun bullet will fail sometimes and probably will fail when you most need it to perform. All the mentioned bullets have good reputations from various tests and all of them have LEO endorsements. I would buy whatever one is available at the time at the lowest price.

SD endless arguement

The smartest thing may be to carry the same thing that your local LEO's carry, for the sure-to-come wrongful death lawsuit! In my area that would be the Gold Dots.....

Just as long as you can hit your point of aim, doesn't much matter. Even hardball will do the job. Shoot what you like, and shoot it lots!

Glad to see someone understands that hardball has "put down" more BG's than anything else!

The State police in Maryland carry HST's but many of the federal guys around carry Rangers. So I think I will be ok with either. The local PD carries Silver tips (not sure why)

If I can find a good 3913 to start carrying I will try to then find some HST's. My 4566 and 5906 are just to big for summertime.

I'll have to agree with most all the members comments, it does not matter as much what is in the pipe, as it matters the placement of said projectile.
