#1 = Maybe True
I was at Walmart a few weeks ago and there was a 5-6 year old pointing the the payphone and asked his Mom; "What is that"?

#2 = Could Possibly Become True
An active kid will need replacement wheels/tires at some point.

Quite a few years ago...20?? We were down at the court house and the judge was outside talking to me...smoking a pipe. My wife told me after he went back to the court ...my grandson, who was about 6-7 y.o. at the time, asked my wife what that OLD Guy had sticking out of his mouth. She was still laughing about it an hour later. Pipe smokers are something you hardly ever see these days

It is rare to see a pipe smoker anymore.
I find it interesting that I hate the smell of cigarettes. But, tolerate and sometimes even enjoy cigar smoke. Almost always find pipe smoke pleasant.

Tried a pipe a few times. Was disappointed to discover that it doesn't taste as good as it smells.

When I worked for a contractor back in the 90s one of our accounts had a dial payphone in the lobby.
Smoking anything near a courthouse seems pretty taboo now days. I've seen a few pipe smokers, but it sure doesn't smell like the pipe tobacco my Grandpap used to smoke. Now, it's all about vaping whatever.

Back numerous years I took part in the Second Chance Bowling Pin match up in Michigan. One day I took a side trip up to Mackinaw City where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan come together. Where I was there were a lot of gulls flying overhead. At the same location was a young mother with her son. The boy suddenly pointed up and said, "Look Mommy, dumpster chickens." I laughed for 15 minutes.

I had something similar happen to me. I was in a phone store looking to get some batteries for my old analog cell phone. I was trying to hang onto it as long as I could because of the increased signal power. When I whipped out my analog cell phone and pulled out the antenna the salesman busted a gut laughing and pulled out his newfangled digital cell phone to take a picture of my brick-like analog cell phone.

Pipe smoke used to smell a whole lot better than cigarette/cigar smoke. I also found out I didn't have the patience to smoke a pipe...I didn't need something to keep my hands busy

My gf and I had a similar experience in a secondhand/antique store a few years ago. A small child was looking at a typewriter and asked his mom - who was maybe 30 or so - what it was. "I don't know", she replied. Maybe she was just tired of answering questions, but if not...

This reminds me of an old "Dennis the Menace" cartoon probably 40 years ago. Dennis's dad is sitting in his over stuffed easy chair in the living room, probably watching TV and smoking his pipe. Dennis is hanging over the back of the chair saying to his Dad, "That stuff smelled pretty good until you set it on fire".:D:D

In the 1950s my Dad used to make his own Briar smoking pipes. I still have some of his smoking implements and a couple of the pipes he made.

I used to make cigarettes for him using his two cigarette making machines and pipe tobacco. He liked them better than "Tailor Mades", and I enjoyed making them when I was about ten.

I made cigarette for my father too. Had 2 rollers...one was a Bugler Boy. The other was red. Both metal with a cloth roller.Still got one somewhere. Also had a cig machine that made 'em with filters. It was plastic and easy to use. You could save half the price on cigarettes... They were about 22 cents at the time. I quit smoking when they got to a buck a pack

I gave up tobacco around 10 years ago. I had already given up cigarettes around 10 years before that by switching to cigars (kinda like the Uncle Buck plan).

But the last 6 months of my 35 years of smoking tobacco I was smoking Dad's pipe. Of all the tobacco products I ever smoked, the pipe was by far the best tasting and probably the least obnoxious smelling.
JMO, and YMMV.

I'm also old enough to remember using pay phones for making business calls when I was in the insurance business. I was one of the first agents in our agency to make the investment to have a phone installed in my car.

Even with a $75 per month "connection fee" and paying $0.56 per minute for calls, it was worth it. I was able to make enough additional appointments and sales for the car phone to more than pay for itself.

That was back in 1989-1990. Technology has come such a LONG ways in the last 40-ish years! :)

A judge can smoke in the courthouse because he is the JUDGE. The sheriff can smoke at the sheriffs office because he is the SHERIFF.

In Montana you can't arrest either without a district court order, same applies to the county commissioners.

I wouldn't count on that anymore.

"A landmark ruling saying Montana has a constitutional duty to guard residents from the harmful effects of climate change could have wider implications, environmental experts said.

In a decision Monday lauded by activists as a potential turning point for the environmental movement, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley sided with young plaintiffs who claimed state policies used to evaluate requests for fossil-fuel projects are unconstitutional because they don't allow for agencies to consider the effects of greenhouse gas emissions – a practice she said had detrimental effects on the environment and the mental and physical health of young people in Montana.

The case marks the first time a U.S. court has held a government liable for disregarding the harmful effects of climate change and thereby violating its children's constitutional rights, according to a statement from Julia Olsen, chief legal counsel and executive director for Our Children's Trust, an Oregon environmental group that has filed similar lawsuits in every state over the past 12 years"

I've never smoked, but long ago figured if I did, it'd be a pipe. As mentioned, pipe tobacco used to smell really good. Then I watched a pipe smoker change the filter in the stem. If all that stuff was in the smoke, wasn't going in me!

I watched #2 happen on an I-95 bridge during a traffic jam in NYC back about '89 in broad daylight. Car about to die pulled out of the traffic lanes and died. As soon as the owner disappeared over the curve of the bridge, the stripping started.

I don't expect the Montana "green" ruling to survive review. I hope.

The Pipe thing triggered a memory............................

true and rightfully so as Montana's state constitution guarantees a right to a "clean and healthful environment." Written right in it.

Constitution of Montana -- Article IX -- ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Section 1. Protection and improvement. (1) The state and each person shall maintain and improve a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.
(2) The legislature shall provide for the administration and enforcement of this duty.
(3) The legislature shall provide adequate remedies for the protection of the environmental life support system from degradation and provide adequate remedies to prevent unreasonable depletion and degradation of natural resources.

But, what in the world does that have to do with arresting someone. Nobody anywhere got arrested over that decision, now will they. You could give a judge, county commissioner or sheriff a summons for smoking inside a government building, but now way you could actually arrest them in this state even for failing to provide a clean environment. To make an actual arrest would take a warrant from a district court judge. There is only one judge in this district and I would highly doubt she would sign a warrant to arrest herself. Besides I have known her from before she became the judge and she does not smoke.

She does drive a very fast Mustang, The staters could give her a ticket, but they could never arrest her.

This Montana district judge finally voluntarily retired in 2014

Judge Jeffrey Langton unfortunately sits (when sober only) on the District Court in Hamilton, Montana (about 45 miles from Missoula).

In February 2005, local police spotted Judge Langton driving erratically in downtown Hamilton. A breath test revealed a blood alcohol level that was well over twice the legal limit in Montana. (they went and got a warrant from another judge)

Subsequently, Judge Langton pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. The trial court also ordered him to stay out of bars and casinos, and not to consume any alcohol for twelve-months.

Luckily for Judge Langton, the court order does not bar him from visiting the "Bitter Root Brewing Co." located in Hamilton. It also does not constrain him from visiting the Harvest Moon Brewery in Belt, Montana for a belt or two (pun intended).

In an obvious effort at compassion for a fellow jurist, the court order does not prohibit Judge Langton from visiting the Bunny Ranch in Reno while attending ethics classes at the National Judicial College. Praise the Lord!!!

In June 2005, a mere three months after his drunk driving arrest, Missoula police responded to an early-morning 911 call and found the Dishonorable Jeffrey Langton passed out near a hotel room. Put simply, Judge Langton was found in a drunken-stupor as pictured to the right.

Ya gotta wonder how in the hell a certified drunk like this is allowed to remain on the bench, right?

Right here in this town a sheriff (6'2" and 275#) from another county came to an inquiry, got drunk at the bar, threw a out of state biker though a window, the guy ended up in the emergency room. The visiting sheriff left the bar, barefoot???, When the local ocal law went to the visiting sheriff's motel they charged him with assault, obstructing a police officer, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He was NOT arrested. He also won reelection back in his own county.

Being a sheriff, a county commissioner or district judge in this state makes you all but bullet proof as long as you can keep getting reelected

Here is another fun fact. In Montana on election day I can not be arrested on my way to the polls. Even for drunk driving.

Montana Code Annotated 2021
TITLE 46. CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
CHAPTER 6. ARREST
Part 1. General Provisions
Persons Exempt From Arrest

46-6-102. Persons exempt from arrest. (1) Electors shall in all cases except treason, felony, or breach of the peace be privileged from arrest during their attendance at election and in going to and returning from the same.

(2) Senators and representatives shall in all cases except felony or breach of the peace be privileged from arrest during the sessions of the state legislature and in going to and returning from the same.

(3) The militia shall in all cases except treason, felony, or breach of the peace be privileged from arrest during their attendance at musters and election and in going to and returning from the same.

(4) Judges, attorneys, clerks, sheriffs, and other court officers shall be privileged from arrest while attending court and while going to and returning from court duties.

Hard to define just what, when and where their duties start and end

Interestingly being drunk is not listed under

TITLE 45. CRIMES
CHAPTER 8. OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC ORDER
Part 1. Conduct Disruptive of Public Order

45-8-101 Disorderly conduct
45-8-102 Failure of disorderly persons to disperse
45-8-103 Riot
45-8-104 Incitement to riot
45-8-105 Criminal incitement
45-8-106 Bringing armed individuals into state
45-8-107 Purpose
45-8-108 Definitions
45-8-109 Civil disorder -- prohibited activities -- penalties -- exceptions
45-8-110 Obstructing health care facility access
45-8-111 Public nuisance
45-8-112 Action to abate public nuisance
45-8-113 Creating hazard
45-8-114 Failure to yield party line
45-8-115 Illegal posting of state and federal land
45-8-116 Funeral picketing -- penalties

Butte paper had all the editorials on how this was a great ruling. Our local weekly quoted all the major news outlets saying it was sure to be over-ruled as it was too idiotic. All parties from the State are in the beginning of the appeals process.
What a difference 30 miles makes.

Unbelievable!

One of the free-est states in the Union is suddenly declaring THE most abundant and effective form of energy (fossil fuels) is retroactively un-constituional - based on the left's redefinition of a "clean and healthful environment". And they are doing this despite all the evidence that EV production and adoption is even WORSE for the GLOBAL environment than fossil fuels.

This is the ultimate example of NIMBY-ism. The environmental impacts of EV's are far away from Montana - in India, China, and other 3rd world countries. So the Green New Deal advocates are all on board with it - because it MIGHT reduce pollution and environmental impact on a LOCAL level.

Nonsense and hypocrisy at it's very finest, assuming that you even buy into the idea that Man-Made Climate Change is a GLOBAL issue.
