Hunting with an X frame.

There is virtually no relationship between barrel length an accuracy. The ONLY purpose for a longer barrel is more "velocity". This holds true for handguns, benchrest rifles, and those sixteen inchers on the USS Missouri

barrel length affects velocity, and velocity affects accuracy

maybe not so much at 50 yards but I bet a 14 inch scoped 460 versus a scoped 5 inch 460 would have interesting results in the hands of the same shooter at 200 yards.

I bought the 460 with my barrel to make very long shots if need be with relative ease(so long as I do my part).

I met a guy at a LGS who had shot a Black Tail Deer at around thirty yards with an S&W 460XVR. The bullet hit in the left front chest and exited around the right side of the tail. He said it looked like a bomb had gone off in the animal and it was like picking up a bag of Jell-O.

I have a 460 with a 14" barrel and Leupold 2.5-8 scope. My concern would be your accuracy with the 5" barrel even with optics. Mine is deadly accurate to 200 yds and then starts to drop off. I will shoot 300 yds but no more. I am shooting the Hornady ammo. I say go for it but I wouldn't want to shoot over 100 yds or so with a 5" barrel, but that's me. LOVE the 460.

Mine is the 8 3/8 th. barrel and it is damn accurate at 100 yards and 200 on a rest. Now just freestanding I am not nearly as good with these older arms and eyes, thank god for the technology of the Leupold scope and porting on the gun to tame it. I feel comfortable I can drop anything at 150 to 200 yards even if i have to shoot twice. Like you say..LOVE THE 460!!

Starting to think more and more about the 8" barrel. To me the 14" just seems too long, and that I should just buy a rifle at that point (just me though). Thanks for all of your input everyone! I am sad I missed Elk season this year, but I just had too much on my plate.

That was EXACTLY my thought. I have rifles with 16 and 18 inch barrels...the 8" is the perfect length to me..Better luck next time on the Elk hunt!

If I really wanted a X .460, I'd wait on John Ross' one to come out. I've a JRC 500 and it as accurate as any handgun I've ever owned. Having said that, I'd feel comfortable carrying any of my S&W .44s for the same purpose.

The Bison was taken in Texas, PM if interested in more details.

I have and shoot a number of 460s. The 7" PC in the bison picture will shoot out past 200 yards with a scope.

I have taken hogs with the 5".

I have used the 10.5" and 12" on bison also.

I don't recommend using the 200 FTX on game animals, opens to quick ruins to much meat.

I agree. While a great round for paper or Varmints, it's too fragile for big game.

I have the 10.5 model. It's accuracy amazes me every time I shoot it. For a backup firearm in a hip holster I would go with the 5''. For a primary hunting handgun, I would opt for longer.

And then if you want to tone it down just a bit the .454 casull can be shot and really is a very capable round in it's own right...

Took two buck whitetails with a 5" last year. One from 65yrds the second from just under 80yrd . Used a Tasco reddot scope that I wasn't sure could take the punishment of 460 recoil but it did just fine.

...I carry my hunting revolver in a padded Pistol Case with D Rings added for a shoulder strap. I carry it with the strap across the chest, and the Case under my Left arm like a muzzleloader possibles bag. You can leave it unzipped on the end when stalking, or zip it shut for security in rough country. I like the case better than a holster for field carry.

Bob

Bob, that sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

Hey all,

I put up a thread in the Ammo board of the forum, it's called ".460 S&W ammo request" and I encourage you to check it out, I think it would help us all.
