Hydraulic Buffer?

Here's a pic of the internals of the Enidine buffer.

I wonder if they 'do' use different valving for compression and rebound ..... ????
I think I'll email and ask them. :)

Yup ... but that's a good thing.
One of the maladies of the AR bolt moving forward so fast is bolt bounce when it goes to battery, along with it slaming in there.
Just like a shock absorber's job to control unsprung weight ( the wheel, tire, brake caliper and disk, etc.) from bouncing about after hitting a bump, the shock provides the dampening to keep the tire on the road.
So a shock absorber (more correctly named a dampener) providing the same effect on an AR bolt's "suspension's" unsprung weight ........ might just be a great way to fix the bolt bounce along with softening out the BCG's slaming about and causing the rifle to move like it's trying to do the Harlem shake! ;)

I'm hoping it makes a believer out of me!

.....That and the inventors are making bank for reapplication of an old technology! lol

This is an interesting test. Good discussion as well.

I use to have an actual Bourns Instruments calibrated piezo accelerometer, that attached to my recording O-scope, and it's probably still in my "mad scientist stuff" but I'll not bet on me finding it any time in this life ........ ;)

Thanks guys, this will be fun and educational!! :)

You lost me at Hello, ;)

So you had a thingamajig, you could attach it to a whosis, which when compared to your whatchamacallit, could make a good cup 'o joe. But only on Tuesdays.

Right?

Yeah, and when brought to max potential by the the overthruster, it would kick in the flux capacitor and move my DeLorean all the way across the 8'th dimension .... to Buckaroo Banzai's place. :p

P.S. Are you guys going to lose Magpul after the Co. state legislature's day?

I'm really afraid to think what our next legislative meeting is going to bring us here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, and am disappointed because Co. was on a short list of places to move to. :(

Alaska- some of the most lax gun laws, about a square mile in land mass for every resident for size, beautiful countryside, some of the best hunting/fishing in the world, friendly people(as long as you don't live in Anchorage), dividends(yes you get a free check every year just for living here), and some of the lowest crime rates in the country(again, as long as you don't live in Anchorage)..... Just sayin.

But to get back to topic, if there's nobody in a cold-weather climate I could try it out and see if cold effects it at all. I could just replicate the same tests that everybody else did in sub-zero temps. But if there is someone already trying it in the cold I can be left out. The results from the trusted ones here are perfectly good enough for me.

......... even though the actual recoil in an AR happens (as I've said before) while the bolt is locked ......

In actuality there's at least two recoil impulses as energy transferred to the bolt carrier assembly must also be dealt with in some manner. For those of you that have ever fired an A5 shotgun with high brass shells when the friction rings are set for light loads may know all too well! The hydraulic buffer transfers the energy over a longer period of time, so the accelleration of the system is lessened. If the buffer doesn't strike the end of the tube in full recoil I would suspect the hydraulic buffer is acting only to slow the accelleration of the reciprocating mass. But if the buffer does strike the end of the tube, then there's yet another accelleration modification which can be readily felt. (The A5 analogy works well in this case.)

Like most of y'all I don't have experience with this particular buffer first hand, but have used an old Colt LMG buffer in an M16. It certainly does reduce the cyclic rate, but I found it of no help in the controllability deptartment. Probably due to the added mass going forward, as noted above in flyer91's posts!

Obviously, the Colt LMG buffer won't fit the carbine!

But I have used another Enidine buffer with great results on an M14. In this case, there's a large improvement in controllability in both semi- and burst fire modes.

T'ain't pretty, but it feels identical to shooting an AR-15, recoil-wise.

Here's a first time shooter to full auto with the bipod on towels on a wooden bench. (quite slippery!) Look closely and you'll note three cases in the air. He had no problems keeping bursts on target at 100 yards:

So these things can help, if the device is tuned for your particular needs!

IMHO: The reduction of cyclic can be accepted, especially if it supersedes the time for the weapon to settle for follow ups.
Fast, but all over the place is only good for ammo mfg's. ;)

Jaymore...sweet 14'

I set up the test with the gun vise and my laser boresighter last night. First I released the bolt with the stock buffer, there is a very pronounced bounce in the rifle. and then with the AR-restor, the bounce was still there but not as much. Seemed to be about half reduced. The bolt still goes home firmly though.

That sounds like it pretty much removed the bolt bounce and reduced the drop by a significant amount.
Which is what you'd expect a dampener to do.

Good to read Grover, and thanks for doing it! :)

Magpul will pull its mags, literally, if hi-cap mags are outlawed here. They've stated outright that they won't manufacture in a state that makes it illegal for its citizens to own the products.

Co. has gone pretty much Kalifornia since the Silicon Valley shipped a google of their techies to Boulder Valley.

I'm pretty sure, as are most of the Democraps, that in two years they will be mostly out. Too little to late.

I'm going to Wyoming, Montana or Idaho prolly.

Tell magpul to come to missouri...u come too...we need more profitable companies and like-minded people here, plus i need more shooting buddies :) just tell magpul i got some land they can build on, or theres a closed-down factory not 20 miles from me with a large workforce to support it...

Kinda like this ? Not the coldest I've ever seen it,but it is a bit chilly with the wind. :D

...STRONG WINDS AND BITTER COLD WIND CHILLS THIS MORNING...

STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS SUSTAINED AT 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 40 MPH...WILL PERSIST THROUGH LATE MORNING.
THESE WINDS WILL COMBINE WITH THE COLD TEMPERATURES TO PRODUCE BITTER COLD WINDCHILLS LOWERING TO AROUND 20 BELOW ZERO THROUGH LATE MORNING.

IF VENTURING OUTDOORS THIS MORNING YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THESE BITTER COLD CONDITIONS.

Just read today. Magpul is Nevada bound.

Good deal...colorado is gonna go downhill fast losing large manufacturing companies in todays economy...at least we will still be able to get out magpul products!

Darn it-I was hoping magpul would come to my town. We have a dupont plant close by and another plant that makes carbon black too. The companies here have formed a "polymer alliance zone" for polymer factories. Whatever that means. All I know is that it would have been nice.

I was more thinking like this-

Lol. Warmed up a bit since last week. We got shut down yesterday as it was -78 with wind. Not quite fair though, as this is at work. Luckily I'm headed home tonight and it's a little warmer there, 12 Today :)
