I am extremely worried that I will drop my 1911!

Guys, got an issue here (I think). My girl bought me a Galco CM266 holster for my Performance Series 1911. This holster obv has no locking strap and the gun fits "snug" but not super tight. If I turn my belt upside down and shake hard the 1911 falls out of my holster. This makes me very nervous due to the gun is not snug enough, no adjustment on holster either. I am worried my jacket or possibly the arm rest of a chair will easily pull it out of my holster. How embarrassing would that be?? Should I return this holster or is there a way to make it tighter???

It's a subjective test, but if the holster can be inverted, even shaken a little without the gun falling out, the holster has enough retention. If it is too tight, it may be hard to draw the weapon in an emergency. The grip is protected in most part by your upper arm and elbow, and due diligence. Passing the abov test, it's unlikely to fall out even if you fall or are knocked down.

If you are uncomfortable with that, consider getting a retention holster as the previous post suggests. A snap as shown is easy to undo, but can be hard to reclose with one hand. The main purpose of a retention holster is to make it harder for someone to snatch it from you. That snap is easy to breach with your thumb, but difficult for someone else to undo.

I witnessed a teenager running from a walmart emergency exit carrying a 12 pack of beer with someone running behind him. (someone that didn't stand a chance in hell catching him) He was headed my direction. I stopped the car and ran after him. Well, my 3913TSW fell out. I was using a Galco leather holster that was formed and had a single belt clip with no top retention. Obviously I stopped to re-secure my gun. Not only was it really embarrassing but it fell out in a pile of sand/dirt cleaning it SUCKED.

So this sounds stupid, but whatever holster I use. I make sure I can run like a bat outa hell now with good retention. The King Tuk I use with my M&P's will do that. Seriously, try it. Do some back and forth sprints in your yard with your setup. If you can't do it. Get something else. I can't help but to wonder had I been running for cover how screwed I would have been.

Gnfanatic, sounds like it's your first "open top" holster. Please don't be concerned. It's a good quality holster and it'll do the job as long as you wear it correctly. Keep your belt tight, which in turn will keep the firearm from catching on stuff. The more you wear it, the more confidence you'll have in it. Nearly every one of us that's carried a firearm for any length of time has used this design at one time or another with no issues. Now, if you are a policeman (I saw the cuff case) and The Job requires holsters with a thumb snap, as my former employer did for several years, then that would be a reason to swap out. (Maybe I just gave you an "out" there...)

I've used these and similar holsters for years without issues.i wouldn't worry too much over it,especially if you are not carrying in condition one.

I think your fears are unfounded as long as you use a properly designed gun belt that fits the slots on the holster. I've carried both autos and revolvers in this very holster for years and never had a problem losing a gun. I have missed the thumb break in a draw before, thankfully not in a "need it right now" situation, and will never again carry a defensive handgun in a holster with one.

The above described gun drop is another reason NOT to use a OWB holster with a belt clip attaching device. The gun is not carried as snug against the body as with a belt slot system and will "flop" when moving quickly. This allows the mass of the firearms to gain momentum and to be more easily "ejected" from the holster.

Your holster is probably within the range of average open top holsters.

Some people ( probably a statistical majority ) have a preference for open top holster, and probably 99% + of them don't have any problems 99% + of the time.

Some people either from general philosophy , having had a past problem , or familarity with effecently using thumbreak holster , prefer a thumbreak.

I am of the latter persuasion.

You could always install a leather loop like a cowboy quick draw holster to hold it tight and it would be easy to loosen it when needed. That way the GF stays happy and the 1911 stays put. Easy fix , problem solved.

Yes I am a leo and love carrying my 1911 on my days off. I cannot try the "run" test at the moment due to someone attacking me with a box cutter and cutting my meniscus. I will let you guys how it goes. I am glad to see alot of you perfer this typw of holster.

I've also noted that when that type of holster is worn... as it "molds" to the curve of your body it and the belt place added retention on the gun!

I've ridden horses fairly aggressively and never had my 1911 fall out of an open top IWB holster (Galco V-Hawk, Milt Sparks VMII, Tucker Answer). With that being said, if it's on your mind it's going to bother you. Wear what you have confidence in.

No, had my glock. The situation got under control quickly. Amazingly during the struggle i did not realize he was slicing me up.

Come out from under there. You are right about expectations. However, it is the unexpected and unimaginable that bites a very few of us. It has been my, unfortunate, experience to be among the very few.
