I am looking at a "used" Shield 9mm tomorrow..what should i be aware of?

If you have trouble on locking the slide back during re-assembly rotate the recoil spring assembly a little at a time and try again. Might take a couple of times but this normally solves the issue. Some can be a little quirky.... I have seen where some folks put a little paint or mark on the RSA when its set proper for future reference.

I had this happen on my Shield as well. It actually happened so often that I called CS and got a replacement RSA. Hasn't happened with the new one and I am not really concerned with the rotation of the RSA at all. Keep an eye on it and if it becomes a problem just request a new one.

So a little update and a question. I went out and shot a few rounds with it and all is good...love the gun. Ordered a holster for it, and am excited to have a new carry gun.:p

Question, and i think i am cleaning it for the first time in its life, the thing seems newer than my 9mm that i bought brand new. But i had a little be of a struggle when i tried to reassemble the gun after cleaning. I could not get the slide stop to engage the slide and hold it open to allow me to raise the slide release lever.

I racked it all the way back and did it several times but i could not get the thing to catch. So i took it apart again and made sure rhe RSA was centered best i could ( no seating slot on the shield like there is on the FS )..and then i put it back together and was able to catch the slide release this time.

I took it apart several times and most times the slide release would catch, but a few more times it would not.

Is this just a little quirk with the gun?

Any hints on assembly ?

Quite common. Even after 1500 rounds, I notice that sometimes I struggle to lock the slide back when reassembling, and sometimes it's not so bad. Hadn't thought about rotating the RSA on it's axis.

LGS posted a Shield 9mm "used" today on facebook for $299 and i called and reserved it pending inspection. Are there any deal breakers for me to be aware of? RSA spring? Anything else?

At that price... i'd prolly pass on the used 9mm unless its barely used and in great condition...

I can get a brand new Shield 9mm for $340 Shipped to FFL brand new. ($360 after FFL Transfer Fee)..

As for what to look for if you go that route- Just use good judgment. I don't own a Shield though so I will not offer advice on what to look for there.

(Sorry, seen you already bought it!)

Yup and yes it was practically brand new, in fact i was able to register is with S&W as brand new so i should have the life time warantee someone else mentioned earlier. And the reason i didn't do a FFL transfer is because i felt awkward doing that for a gun that would have cost me $440 brand new in the store...kind of a slap in the face to the gun store i thought. Better to buy his used gun in my mind.

Ah, yea.. Well, my FFL is my neighbor and I pay him $20 for my transfers. lol. He doesn't mind it though. Retired Navy so its just extra money for him. :-)
