Location
Northern Indiana
My parents are not doing well and I cannot get them down here to Georgia so I am selling out and buying a home in Northern Indiana to take care of my Mom and Dad. I have not lived there for 20 years.
If there are any members in the Elkhart area let me know:o

Hope that move and care of your folks goes well. You're a good son.

OBW.......go ahead and pick up a snow shovel. You can do a google search, if you have forgotten what they look like, since you've been livin in Dixie !

Good luck, I would not like to move back on the southern edge of those lakes in Winter (Winter is roughly Labor day to Memorial Day). I did ten years in Akron. That was more than enough. Peace be with you.

I am very fond of N.E. Georgia, and north Ga. in general. Is there a way that you could keep your property to retire on, or maybe buy land when you sell your place as an option for the future?

I lived two winters in the early 60's near Huntington Ind. that was enough for this southern boy.

I feel for you having to move back to that ice box.

Southern Indiana is much better, but you seem to be in no position to make that choice.

Just like in Ohio. The cold wouldn't bother me so much, but I'd go absolutely bonkers living in a flat, featureless landscape. Around here we have hills, variations in topography..."up there" it is either flat town or flat country...and it all looks the same no matter where you go.

A DIFICULT TIME AHEAD...

Doing right by your folks is a noble thing. Caring for my Mom was the most difficult & exhausting thing I've ever done, & there were 3 siblings, and I did it for a living. If it is just you (no wife/kids) might you be able to move in with them "temporarily" & keep the place in Ga, if you like it there? OR consider renting & make this a temporary move??? Good luck.

Welcome back...I'm in Northwest Indiana. Good gun laws...lots of hiking...gun shows...lake shore. We do get some tough weather but I love it here.

Sounds like you are doing what you need to do.
On a lighter note- Ten Most Redneck Towns in Indiana

Years ago, I was stationed there and lived in Peru.
I have friends in Logansport.
Had a BIL in Scottsburg.

I was born and raised on the Ohio River in southern Ohio but lived in Cleveland for awhile after I left college. Like living in two different countries. Beautiful scenery is everywhere in southern Ohio, none around Cleveland. Far milder winters down south, and in fact snowfall in any accumulation is rare. I remember four consecutive winters there with no snow at all. It can get cold from December through March, but nothing like Cleveland where the sun seldom shines and slush reigns supreme all winter. One of my life's happiest days was moving away from Cleveland.

Little-known fact - Prior to WWII Cleveland was the third largest city in the USA after NYC and Chicago. I have often wondered why so many people chose to live there.

I grew up in southern IN. I loved it. I moved to my current location to care of my sick mother. She passed a year or so after I moved here so I considered moving back to iN until I met my wife who is really attached to this area with all of her family and friends and such, so PA is home now. If my situation ever changes I'll probably go right back to IN, but I don't see (or want) that to happen.
Good luck with the move, you gotta do for family (been there, done that), home is where family is.

Family ties can be strong. The company I worked for in Cleveland went through the usual corporate manipulations, with a major merger with a company in Texas, and the decision was made to move the corporate HQ of the new company out of Cleveland to Dallas. The company made it attractive for the Cleveland HQ employees to re-locate to Dallas by offering very generous re-location benefits. One might think that most would have jumped at the chance to move to Dallas, but they didn't. Over half of them stayed in Cleveland, mainly because that's where their extended families and friends were.

I pray that you and your parents will do well. I grew up in Elkhart, moved to Brownsburg. Indiana in 1968, and came to South Carolina in 1974. I can't imagine moving back up there.

I was born in Elkhart and lived there until I went into the Navy at 17. I know perfectly well the winters. My Mom and Dad have lived almost all of their lives there, Dad was born in Alabama and Mom is from Virginia. So getting them to move away from all the family and grandkids is a no go.
I am married and my wife supports this. I lucked out finding her!!
