don't shoot the messenger :D but I find the amalgamation between LEO ( retired or serving) and folks on a forum interesting? I would imagine and after I have watched a boat load of COPS shows that an LEO officer would be really wary of people with guns? Maybe its because this is a virtual forum and anonymity is the shield?( but there is definitely a cohesive element within gun forums) Just asking if any LEO go to the range with civilians ? and if so how do they rate a civilian amatuer shooter versus an officer with training?

Sadly, many, if not most LEO's, local, state, and federal are really not gun enthusiast's; that and many in the military don't care for guns. My limited research tells me that most of these non gun types first learned how to use a gun when they became LEO recruits, or when they entered the military...for them, it's just another piece of equipment.

I believe in the Constitution and I think all law abiding citizens have a right to be armed and to self defense. I can't speak for all LEO's, but I have plenty of shooting buddies who are not LEO'S or even Ex-Military.

Most of the LE old timers shoot well, but too many of the younger ones are spray and prayer's, I've seen my share of Non-LEO's who shoot extremely well and would embarrass the spray and prayers.

The only difference I can truly see is those who've been in shoot-outs have a better idea of how they'll do when/if it happens again, but it's still no guarantee, just as any military combat vet will tell you.

P.S. No offense, but you'll notice I never used the word "civilian". The attempt to militarize the Police and to foster an Us vs Them mentality is one of the biggest issues LE faces today. JMO.

Excellent point.

It seems that the older generation of cops were more firearms friendly. Most of the cops I worked with were recreational shooters and hunters. I think the newer generation is just that, a product of these times where much of the education system vilified firearms and instills a fear of them in our kids.

Only reason I could see Cops staying away from this forum is how anticop some members are. But as others have said very few Cops are gun people. Try discussing ballistics with a Cop. Or just ask about his ammo.... most have no clue.

LEO GUN ENTHUSIASTS

Back in the 70's when smaller gun clubs were cheap to join, I belonged to several. it didn't take long to figure out that we ALL had the love of guns in common, S0 a leo speaking to a civilian doesn't surprise me. gun cranks come from all walks of life.

It is indeed a very sad evolution :(
But I am always wondering where this feeling comes from?

My fascination for firearms goes as far as I enjoy cleaning them.

I don't like the modern police either. I don't have the feeling that they see themselves there to protect and serve. They look intimidating pretty much seem to be just waiting for someone to step over the law so they can go for it...

It is sad the attitude some of the LEO have. I do not say this to disparage them, but I had the experience of one I worked with who had absolutely no respect for anyone armed with a 6 shot revolver. He believed in the " spray and pray " philosophy I guess.
I asked him which one of the 6 shots concerned him most and his reply was " I have 45 rounds on my belt, 6 don't concern me at all"
I wished him well, what else could I do?

Heres my opinion. Back in the older days the cop was just another guy in town that chased us. We respected him! Cause he was the cop. When I went in as a Reserve the people in town showed us respect as we did the same to them. Now! Today! Does JQ average citizen respect the cop No! The cop knowing JQ does not respect him does not respect JQ. As far as gun guy goes. I carried a SW 686 until made to go Glock. I had so many younger people ask me what the 686 was. I was not able to unholster and let them touch and feel wish I could have. I felt the younger ones appreciated my taking time to explain. This only my opinion.

My guess is the gun boards attract only the gun savy cops, and they have been around gun clubs and shops long enough to know that we are all on the same team.

The cops who want to disarm us are the ones who don't like guns. Ed

I have a younger friend that was an ex-military cop at a high level. He got out and tried civilian life but that didn't suit him. He joined up with the local PD and seems happy.

Anyhow.......

We talked about things when we met and he found out I liked revolvers and classic rifles.

We've been to the range several times together and both surprise each other.

He's scary good.

I am a civilian and been to the range with cop friends but then again a big percentage of my co workers were retired leo,s but I also had leo friends that were current. We had them that were both sides of the spectrum. Some were interested and some not so much. Here is a old picture on one deer hunting trip most of these guys were los angeles pd and I belive one or two were swat. (Not the clown aiming at the camera) I am the guy on the left with the pipe. Golly that was a long time ago. Even their kids might be retired!

I think you may have answered me right there? Thanks for the LEO Civilian insight I had no idea? I would hope that would be mainstream thinking?

LEOS VS CIVILIANS

I've had em save my butt at times and put it in a sling at others, (I earned it). they are humans like the rest of us. some good, some bad, and how they act while working is usually totally different then when they are off duty in my experience.

I totally agree on the militarization of law enforcement. Not everything is a SWAT call out, and not every problem needs force to solve. That is a huge, silent threat to American society and the freedoms we enjoy.

Back to the O.P.'s point, I never saw any problems with armed citizens. Just remember that the citizen knows the officer won't shoot him without cause, but officers never know what a citizen will do. The officer doesn't know it will be a shoot out until the bad guy decides. So, yes, the presence of an additional weapon (other than what the officer brought!) will tend to up the stress level until things work themselves out.

From what I've seen at the range, Most want to shoot their duty weapons, fewer are shooting classics but they get interested when I shoot the cool stuff.

But I don't think most have the passion for classics that we share here on this forum.

I was going to make this point too, until I got to your post. If you're not subject to the UCMJ, you're a civilian. If you don't know what the UCMJ is, you're probably a civilian. Cops and firefighters, despite the fact that many of them want to pretend otherwise, are civilians too.
