OP: Congrats on your find. This is my '36 in Nickle purchased in 1984, out the door at $228.31. I replaced that hideous S&W wood grip with a modern version. I have never fired this gun.

Got my first 36, new in the box, in 1965. Cost me nothing, it was an award for top scholastic in my Police Academy. It was my off duty gun until I made detective, then my duty weapon for 6 years, when once again it became my off duty piece. Still resides in my nightstand.

Dr. Jinks calls those serial numbers "the roving J series." The first one known shipped on April 16, 1970, and the last one known is 999J68, which shipped on April 11, 1973 (in the photo).



Thanks for sharing the serial number. Based on others that bracket yours in the database I'd estimate yours shipped late in 1971.
