I Found One!

I was around when that Manual was put out, and I WILL have one of these revolvers, too! Very nice!!!

Good for you, ikor!

We should form an old guy's shooting club! :)

P.S.- If that "ikor" = I Corps, I was there myself.

Very nice sixgun er eightgun there Steve, congrats on gettin it! How do you like those grips? Dale

Thanks!

I love looking at the grips, but my admiration ends there. They're too short for me. I'm replacing them with a Pachmayr Decelerator grip due to arrive tomorrow.

Well, I finally got to the range yesterday and put a little over 100 rounds of .357 Magnum ammo through it including 110gr Winchester JHP and Remington SJHP, 125gr Remington Golden Saber, Federal 130gr Hydra-Shok, Winchester 145gr Silvertip, and Federal 158gr Hydra-Shok. It had a definite preference for the heavier weight bullets and I got my best groups with the 145gr Silvertips and 158gr Hydra-Shoks. Since the Silvertips are impossible to find these days, I've settled on the 158gr Hydra-Shoks as my carry ammo in this wheelgun. I got the best groups with them and their recoil is very manageable. In fact, the only ammo I shot where the recoil was heavy was the 130gr "Low Recoil" Hydra-Shoks. If ever ammo was incorrectly labeled, this is it! The marketing boys obviously never fired any of this stuff because it's wicked hot! :D

Bottom line, this 627 PC is one of the sweetest revolvers I've ever shot and that's covering a lot of ground. The trigger is light and smooth as silk and it's very accurate. I'm super pleased with it.

Here's a pic of it sporting new Ahrends Retro Combat cordia wood grips. These grips fill my hand just right and they look pretty darn good too. :)

Thanks!

I don't think twice about the lock anymore. As soon as I buy a new Smith, I neuter the lock. :D

I swapped in the Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed rear sight today. The sight picture is fantastic. It comes up clear and fast.

Beautiful gun sir. In the first photo, is that an old fashioned sap, or billy? I remember my Dad had one of those when he was a town constable about fifty-three years ago. No gun, all the town would give him was the sap. Times have changed. Enjoy your new gun, what a great find.

Thanks for the compliment, Mitch!

Yes, that's a vintage Bucheimer "Midget" flat sap. It was the smallest one Bucheimer made and I carried it when in plainclothes. While on-duty I carried a Bucheimer "Denver" which was carried in a pocket in our uniform trousers specially made for saps or billies. You can see this pocket (as well as my Denver) in the photo below.

I found it on YouTube. But I need to get the S&W Revolver A Shop Manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen first. I'd rather spend the $25 for reference. Gonna need it later anyways! I just got my first S&W revolver. BTW, I responded to your thread on the 1911Forum so I already told you what a great gun you have. And again, thanks for the info on 5 Star Firearms!:)

You're very welcome! ;)

Besides that video on YouTube, also check out the THR (The High Road) web site. In their Handguns: Revolvers forum, "stickied" at the top, there is an excellent, illustrated tutorial titled "S&W model 10 disassembly, inspection, select repairs and reassembly - discussion." And don't forget "The Plug" thread in the Classified forum here on this site. :)

I'll be damned. I love these forums. I saw where somebody had made a reference to the plug in a post on one of your threads but didn't understand. So,... when i took off my grips last night I noticed a metal strap going from the bottom of my grip into the side plate. Which isn't the same as it looks in the YouTube video. I have a new 686+. His just shows the plunger. Do you guys recommend me doing this w/o getting the shop manual or should I wait til next week when the book shows up to take out the internal lock? I should wait, huh. I need to order the plug this weekend anyways. Thank you for your help!!!

Are you talking about the flat hammer spring? The revolver in the video has a coil spring. Read my post directly above yours and check the sticky on the THR site. All will become clear. ;)

Yes you are correct it's the Coil Mainspring.

You may call it the Flat Hammer Spring, but in THR thread he calls it the Mainspring or Flat Mainspring. So in that thread it says,... "Removed the locking flag. The little nub on top is what locks the hammer. The little nub can be ground flat to disable the lock, if you so desire." So then I wouldn't need "The Plug" then, correct? Although I like the look of the plug instead. And nobody would be able to insert the key and try to turn it!

In that thread he takes off the cylinder and yoke and then says,... "If you want to see how things work inside, reinstall the yoke, cylinder and lightly seat the yoke screw (in red). Push down as shown to seat things properly. It locked up on me a couple times until I figured this out :" Do you really need to take off the cylinder and yoke in the first place? On the YouTube video he doesn't remove em. Doesn't seem they need to be removed.

If I didn't have to take the CCW class 1/22 - 1/23 I'd get on this right away. But I'm gonna order the shop manual, get more familiar with everything and do this after the class. Thanks for your help! Take care!
