My most recent Colt 1911 is a NIb series 70 that has some interesting features (blued slide, stainless frame, commander ring hammer and old school commander grip safety). I like this setup!!

Last week I finally got to the range to try it out.

Shot 150 rounds of 230 gr. FMJ. It was 100 percent flawless, even with a mix of Colt and Wilson mags.

I was reminded how enjoyable the 1911 is at the range: it felt like a sewing machine! Each round was a wonderful experience, and if you pay attention, a 1911 cycling and recoil impulse is like no other handgun ever made.

It's just a perfect balance for carry, shooting, safety and accuracy. I keep coming back to JMB's crowning achievement.

I totally get the 1911! Anyone else feel like this?

Yeah, I like 'em.

It's one of only 2 autos that I shoot regularly-the other is a Woodsman. When I was coming up I was told that double action revolvers should be Smith & Wessons and autos should be Colts. Single actions could be Colts or Rugers.
I don't shoot much other than .22 and .38 special but I still love shooting my Government Model.

Regards,

Nice gun. Glad you're happy with it, but really, why not? It's a good quality 1911 and it's .45-caliber. That should do it! :D

BTW, that is NOT an old-school Commander grip safety. Well, maybe that depends on how old school you are, but in any case, it is not the original Commander style - and you might be grateful for that!

Nice Colts!
I actually prefer the plain gov. Model over the 'enhanced' versions. I like traditional grip safeties and low profile GI sights. I don't need checkering or fancy hammers.

I can appreciate those early features (I've got an A1 from WWII), but for shooting pleasure and practicality: a bump on the grip safety, upgraded sights and an updated manual safety make it a better pistol for me.

That said, beautiful Colt! Enjoy that pistol.

Thanks!
What type of grip safety is this one called? It's a little more curved upward than the 1911a1, but it's still short. It's actually my favorite type, and I've seen it on commanders.

It appears to be a Government model grip safety that was milled to provide clearance for the Commander hammer. That was very common back in the 70s before the beavertails/duckbills got going strong. The original Commander grip safety was very short and dug into my hand quickly. It was short enough it did not require a clearance cut, like you see on the safety on your gun.

I've always thought of the 1911 as a perfect pistol. What other semi-automatic pistol designed more than 110 years ago is still in common use today, essentially unchanged? What a testament to John Browning's genius!

Me, too, on most of the alleged "upgrades". The short front sight works very well as long as your eyes are okay or they're corrected to be okay. It does take some practice to get used to the low front sight, but such a sight will work as well as anything else once you do a bit of shooting.

There are a lot of enemy KIAs from World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam who are a testament to the accuracy and effectiveness of those "plain" 1911s...

I'm down to 6 from a high point of 17! From the early 80' to the mid 90's I built about 40. Most were with used GI parts, and new alloy frames from Federal Ord. The frames were good for around 800 rounds. When my personal 1911's frame cracked at the slide stop round hole, I replaced it with a steel Essex. About 15,000 round and still going strong. This is now my "Wild Bunch" gun.

I have 2 Colt Commanders, 1 in 45 & 1 in 38 Super and a couple of Para's that are Small framed and 45.

But as a father, I want my children's homes to be safe. So when my sons turned 21, they got a "Kit". The kit has 1-1911 (something close to an A1 configuration) a holster of their choice, a GI cleaning kit with a few extra tools, 2- mag pouches with 4- GI mags, 1-Wilson mag, 200 rounds of ball ammo. There are also instructions and illustrations so they can call me or order online, any parts they would ever need, from anywhere in the world. That will help keep the grandkids safe!

Uhh, Ivan, you've heard of ITAR, right? Good luck with that "anywhere in the world" stuff nowadays. :D

You can thank our friends in that place that ends in D.C.

BTW, it's a bit late but Happy Crossing the Delaware/Battle of Trenton Day! (My own personally-declared national holiday.)

My sister in law's

Longtime Beau was an NC State trooper and before that, a Vietnam infantry marine. We were doing a bit of shooting back of the house, and he related that at one point one of his squad members was standing in his fighting hole dropping enemy soldiers as they ran past, and exclaiming with joy over the killing qualities of his 1911a1. And i really dont think this man was kidding.
