I hate language evolution....

"Should have," not "should of."

On the other hand, I recently learned that stuff that teachers pilloried me for in school (for example, beginning a sentence with a conjunction) was never considered improper by the recognized experts. And don't get me started on the Oxford comma.

Exactly right! And not only should, but would, could and might HAVE. Please??

I wish I could remember the name of it, but when the children were small we had a completley incomprehensible book of childrens stories in which the language had been modernized and rendered politically correct.

Alas, reading comprehension has also declined. :o

If one does not believe that, one should try to moderate an internet forum with a well published set of rules.

Perhaps it is not a failure of comprehesion.
Perhaps it is just disregard. "What I know needs to be said."
Perhaps it is just defiance. "I don't care about those rules."
Perhaps it is just elitism. "I'm ME, and should not be hindered by regulations pertaining to the masses."

Those rules I refer to are:
The following topics are BANNED on this Board:
Abortion
Religion
Racial issues
<<<<<<<<
Gay rights/homosexuality <<<<<
General LEO bashing
Political Discussion and Comment
Do NOT participate in discussion of banned topics.

and:
"Cre@t!ve sp&!!ing" of the words which the filter traps is forbidden.

Yet I've deleted several posts discussing the evolution of the definition of "gay", and several more that are obvious discussion of the dialects of racial groups, and one or two with creative spelling.

The rules apply all day, every day.
I can lock the thread if you folks just can't control yourselves......

It all started before the internet with the Speed Reading Courses!:D

I consider myself almost bi-lingual at times. I can speak with the kings at the hi falutin' cocktail parties I sometimes go to and can get down to the street level real quick when I'm involved in the criminal justice system. You'd be amazed at what an icebreaker it is for my young urban clients when they see a 62 year old white guy speaking street.
Look, as far as language goes, it be what it be and I got lot's more important things on my plate to worry about!
Now 'scuse me whilst I go cogitate on what to cook for dinner tonight.

I don't know where you find the time, and patients to manage this great forum. Your rules are precise and clearly stated. I can understand your anger, when your rules are broken. I've run afoul of one myself, and was justifiably reprimanded. No hard feelings. I believe the answer lies in the fact, that the last couple of generations of people were never taught responsibility for their actions, thus no rule applies to them. They don't understand why they should. Have patients, please don't give up on us.
We need you. Continue your good work. THANKS.

Scotch language?

"Gaelic is a Scotch language. Scotch language?" Is that how you speak after you've sipped a bit too much? Maybe you meant Scottish language or Scots language?

Actually, Scotch is a contraction of Scottish documented since the 16th century. It is considered archaic today and no longer used as an adjective except in fixed terms such as Scotch whisky, and apparently disliked by the Scots themselves, but it is not wrong as such.

PS: But Gaelic is definitely not a Scotch or Scottish language, but Scottish is a Gaelic language, that is, originating with the pre-Roman, pre-Germannic Celtic inhabitants of the British Isles. Scottish Gaelic needs to be distinguished from Scots, a Germannic language only spoken in the Scottish Lowlands.

The garbage I see written by people who are alleged to fellow attorneys is darned annoying. I sometimes get to make fun of them in briefing, and do.

He has scads of them on his forum.....

Thanks srsmyth:
I needed that. My understanding of patients, given by my spellchecker, proved faulty. It brought to mind a great quote by a famous homespun philosopher, "Never miss a chance to shut your mouth". I'll do that now, and try to keep it "shut".

(Edit: Sorry to srsmyth, sometimes this old android shows thumbs, other times it doesn't. Maybe it's related to HAL the computer in Space Oddysey. I know the spellcheck is related to Dr. Strangeloves arm.)

Let's eat grandma.
Let's eat, grandma.

Commas save lives.

Or: Eats, shoots and leaves.
Vs: Eats shoots, and leaves.

From the Bulwer-Lytton Writing Contest

"Baking under the blazing New Mexico sun, as he stood in the dusty street outside the saloon, Old West certified public accountant Arthur W. Fetterman Jr. hovered his sweaty hand over the butt of his borrowed six-gun, advanced another reluctant step toward famed gunfighter, John Wesley Hardin, and wondered for the hundredth time what had possessed him to correct the man's use of "supposably" during their tense high stakes poker game."

It comes from people trying to write the way they speak. This is not the correct way to do it.

You have time to think before you write, and time to edit, and time to check spelling, use it. What you write should be as close to perfect as you can get it to be. It is a reflection of not only your intelligence, but self respect, and respect for the people reading it.

When you are speaking you can think briefly before you speak, but you don't get to edit, and alter what you said. So some leaway is given, and it is not judged so harshly.

Also an accent should not be present in writing, unless you are quoting somebody with an accent.

WHY YOU TRIPPIN?

Speaking in the language of "certain ethnic groups"??? Those lines are SO BLURRED you must be cray. :D MANDATORY READ!!! :D, PLEASE read the following, sure thing. Tell me I have to, not so much. "Ask us to stay, & we'll leave".
