I HAVE FINALLY RAISED THE SURRENDER FLAG IN RELOADING 45ACP

I have over 60 pounds of .45ACP brass. I have shot .45ACP more than I have shot anything else. A lot of the brass is over 30 years old, but with that much brass it does not get cycled through as much. I am given a lot of ACP brass by guys at the range that know that I reload for it and 95+% is still large pistol primers. I do however, keep the small pistol primered brass that I find. I keep it separate for a rainy day if needed.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with SPP 45ACP brass.
You just have to sort the SPP from the LPP, and if you put them side by side it isn't too hard to tell one from the other.
Its a good idea to inspect your brass before reloading it anyway, so a quick glance at the case head to sort SPP from LPP isn't a big deal.
I have a lot more 45 LPP fired brass than 45 SPP brass, but I don't throw out either - especially since the SPP is becoming more and more common.

When I was shooting 4 a fair amount I bought a Dillon 1050 at an auction...300 dollars. I only bought it because the price was right and the full powder tube had a piece of tape on it marked 5.4 gr 231...I loaded 5.5....so...I set it up aa home...loaded all 17 primer tubes and after checking powder charges and tweaking seating etc. Went to town. I had a couple thousand cases ready to go. 2 hours or a little more later...they wre done. It is very easy to do 10,000 rounds in 3 or 4 days without hurrying.I haven't loaded any in about 4 years...but will eventually run out of loaded stuff. . I can almost hit that rate with the 750 in 38s...I too find reloading a bit of a chore

BTW luckily i still have about 15000 LP 45 cases left...no small 45s

While I do prefer 45 acp's that uses LPP's (just more traditional) I don't have any real issue with the SPP version other than the fact that I need to separate them. That to me is just another step, another caution and another pain in the butt.

I've not actually loaded up any SPP version yet but from what I have read, I expect velocity will drop by a few dozen feet per second using the same exact powder amount. No big deal to just turn up the dispenser a little.

Quit being cheap! Star-Line sells new brass everyday. Buy once, cry once. If you can’t afford it, quit shooting, take up fishing.

Kevin

I have purchased some brass from Starline in the past (mostly uncommon cartridges) but deem it foolish to leave once fired brass on the range floor from people who simply do not reload. Like I said, I am in primer heaven (have lots of them) and have more than enough both large & small. Silly for me not to use what I have.

BTW, I'd never buy new 45acp empty brass! It costs approximately half the price of brand new loaded ammo. Before buying empty brass I'd buy factory loaded ammo, shoot it and then reload it. Today, when buying new components at current prices, reloaded ammo with new brass costs more than factory ammo does.

Starline brass is .22 cents a case, the polymer coated bullets are about .15 cents each, primers are .10 cents each and powder is about .04 cents. All tolled, a reloaded 45acp with new Starline brass is over $25 bucks a box - silly when I can but factory Federal brand ammo for less money isn't it? Then just use the brass.

Now that I have resigned myself to using SPP 45acp, I will have absolutely no problems getting once fired brass for free. Plus I get to exercise bending down to get it. lol! :D

Cheap? Nah....., just makes too much sense to me. IMHO I'd be pretty foolish to not pick up free, once fired brass for reloading. Especially when I do have plenty of SPP's that I bought a long time ago at under $27.00 per thousand. :p

OMG help me out here.
I would ask you to tell us where you get them for 4 cents, but I figure you won't because if you did they would probably be sold out in a few hours.
OMG, I can't believe that a reloader hasn't shopped around to get the best deals. There is a website called ammoseek.com. This isn't directed to you, but whomever said to buy new Starline brass must not reload!

I'm still trying to get my head around a range that bans FMJ bullets.

My club's indoor range was built in about 1970. The backstop was steel, angled into a sand trap. After about 10 years the steel was so damaged that we had to put plates to cover the damage. THAT was when FMJs were outlawed.

Two years ago we did a major upgrade of everything. NOW, any bullet type is OK, as long as it is a "std" load, not a magnum.

Nah. It should be off to the nursing home. Have you ever priced worms lately?

I am well aware of ammoseek. The cheapie primers are all foreign stuff. Are they OK? I dunno. I'm not going to try. Regardless, add shipping and hazmat and they aren't 4 cents any more.

American primers are about the same as what I can get locally. The hazmat and shipping makes ammoseek not cost effective even if you buy in quantity.

Starline only sells brass. Why would anyone buy brass if they did NOT reload?

:p

I'm lucky enough to have stocked up before the plandemic.
Coated bullets + 231 or Bullseye and USA made primers add up to 13¢ a piece

I was refuting your first claim that large pistol primers weren't available. Looks like Winchester LPP went up since yesterday. They are now $45.39 shipped! If you can get Winchester LPP for that locally, well good on ya! My point about .45 ACP brass, is that people who shoot a lot should have scrounged good brass so that they don't have to buy new Starline. I only bought new brass when I was hand loading for match ammo for big matches and I still saved a lot of money over buying factory match ammo.

Maybe I overlooked something in the comments so far, but I didn't think Starline brass was expensive. It's good brass and worth the reasonable price to have new brass with the same headstamp. It can be loaded many times.

I didn't say they were NOT available. I said I was saving them. I bought a few bricks about a year ago for $89 and have ample supply right now. The SPP are on the shelf ALL the time, the LPP maybe only once a month.

I used your link to Ammoseek and DID find the cheap Winchesters. So, I decided to see what the final price was. 9 cents a piece with S&H&hazmat. There was only one supplier with that 4 cent price, and a review of their 2025 Reviews didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. All the others were over 9 cents to begin with.

These cretins that put small primers in .45 ACP cases should be put in stocks, humiliated by day and subject to unspeakable acts at night.
Those that "hate" and revile against SPP changes should be put in a rest home. Rooms with black and white TVs that only show reruns of Gomer Pyle USMC. Serve only S.O.S. dinners and (powdered) scrambled eggs. Sunday meals are Swanson Fried Chicken TV dinners. No newspapers newer than 1960 and only Noir moves in the rec room.

I have salvaged 95% of my brass from ranges over the last 50 years. Some are from when I bought factory ammo to shoot and saved the brass. Some once fired brass given to me. That said I have bought brass from Starline for calibers that are hard to find and have never had an issue with their products.

Hay wait a minute....I like Swanson TV dinners.

I didn't say they were NOT available. .

Here's what you said, "Primers are readily available now, but ONLY in the small variety." Remington LPP can be had for $52.43/ 1,000, including shipping, if one orders 5,000. I'm done with this.

Those who "respect" inanimate objects, like brass, should listen and learn.:)
