It is a .38 M&P Model 1905 4th Change. Your gun was manufactured about 1923. The grips are from a K frame made sometime post late 1960s.
Somebody on this Forum can supply you with the correct grips I would guess. The correct grips would be the square butt stocks without the horn that covers the frame screw. I have a 4th change manufactured in 1920 with original grips and they do not have a monogram but I am not sure if that would be correct for yours. Someone with more knowledge will most likly answer that question for you. Joe

1923 seems right. The grips would be the non-magna non-medallion
convex grips. This means that in the area where there would be
a medallion, the wood will be curving outwards. Thus the name convex.
These grips were used from roughly 1920 to 1930.

Mine was made in 1922, these are correct grips for then.
Wow! 1923? Better go easy on the loads I run through it. I know most seem opposed to re-blue jobs, but this one might need one for self-preservation, The bore is good and it locks up well; however there are some light rust patches on the grips, My gunsmith checked it and it's still a shooter. They made hundreds of thousands of this model didn't they? I mean there is no particular collector value other than as I bought it, a cool old Smith that still shoots? Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge. six

DOH! Sorry, the one in front.
In that picture, the lower pair of grips is not factory, and the upper
pair is from the 1930 to 1940 period. If your gun is from 1922, those
are not the right grips - they are 8 years before they were made !
These guns are the model of 1905, of which the serial numbers run from
about 63,000 to 1,000,000 . So yes, they made lots of them. Of course,
this large number includes all barrel lengths, two finishes, two sight
configurations, and the K-32's and K-22's.

Mike, you're saying the grips are older than the revolver? And yes the Brazilian Navy 1937 would be right for those grips. Thanks!

Great pic and gun, digi-shot. So that's the correct grip! Your 1905 has been somewhat better taken care of--or have you rehabed it some? Are the grips original, or did you add them? It looks like a 4 inch barrel, other than that and condition ours would be twins. Thanks for the excellent photo.

Those convex non-medallion grips on the Philadelphia PO gun are
the correct grips, and they are probably original. They are the
style from about 1920 to about 1930.

I've kept it like I found it... just cleaned and oiled it. Officer John W. Jerdon's name is stamped on right side plate.
It's got a 4" barrel and the grips are the ones that came with the gun. They show a bit of wear, especially on the right hand grip.
