In 1983 I bought a new Model 24-3 for $375 OTD. It was Skeeter's fault. At the same time my best friend bought his first gun with my help, a minty 4" Model 28 from John Jovino for $189! Remember those ads in Shotgun News? I traded my .44 Special to my brother for a Harley 175, later sold the bike for $500, then bought the gun back for $350. Thinking back I realize this was my first S&W. Now it ain't goin' nowhere.

Cool! My first S&W was a 4" M19 that I bought in 1980 and blew up in 1997. But my second S&W was a 2" Model 10, purchased in 1981, that's still as perfect today as it was 30+ years ago!

I cannot recall what I paid for either gun but for sure I don't think either was more than 300 to 350 bucks. Maybe less....

My first was a 629 bought early 80's saw Lone Wolf Mcquade with Chuck Norris and had to have one she been shot around 25000 mostly full house Elmer Keith loads still accurate but not as tight or timed as well as new but what a great old gun would still use it to defend home and family if needed

Bought a 19 back in the 70's, paid about $125.00 Out The Door.
Still have it, shot the hell out of it over the years.

Nice 24-3. Skeeter had that effect on people...:)

My first S&W was a new model 28-2, six inch, in 1977, when I was 18. I had a pistol permit, but my mother still had to make the actual purchase for me, as I was under 21.

Lots of guns have come and gone, including that one.

BUT, I still have my second S&W ever, a model 18-3 that I bought that same year. It is a little finish challenged now, but it has spent many miles in a holster while rambling about in the woods.

I bought a Model 18-3 in the mid 80s used for $175 and foolishly traded it to a friend. Almost thirty years later I offered him $450 for it and now I have it back. Here it is in a holster I just made to sell after I make a matching ranger belt.

$350 for a Mdl 24-3? Yeah, that's about what I paid a few months ago for mine....:p
My brother took it to a gun shop first to sell it without asking me first! They wouldn't give him $350 for it. Befor that he and his family drove from the Bay Area back to L.A. Once home he realized he left the gun under the pillow in a Bakersfield motel! He hopped in his car and drove hours back there and they gave it to him. Whew! This poor gun was very traumatized by all that but is fine now. I've shot it hundreds of times and it still looks great. It got a little jealous when I got this one...

Got ya beat! I bought my first Smith, a 6 1/2" 29-2 in 1968. Still have it, it has had quite a few rounds through it, but still locks up tight and has a very nice trigger. I replaced the target trigger with a standard trigger for double action work when I was young and have never changed it back. I know I saved the trigger somewhere, but have moved several times and I'm afraid it has disappeared.

I think I still have a few editions of Shotgun News from that early 80s timeframe. I'll check, but if I do, I'll gladly send you a copy to "match" your gun :)

Wow, really? That would be great. Actually, I mentioned the Shotgun News for my friend's used John Jovino Model 28, but my Model 24-3 was bought out of there, too, so it might be in there but a slimmer chance. I believe the dealers were Southern Ohio distribution or something like that. I just wish now I got a 4" 28 like I told my friend would be a good first gun for him since he wanted a .357.

This is the story behind my first S&W. The owner of my LGS was going to a big show back around 1985 and I gave him $300 to try and pick me up a nice .357 like a 4" model 19. He didn't find one, but did find this. I suppose the stocks are worth that today ;) Found out many years later that it was shipped my birth year 2 months after my birth. Still have it of course.

my first Smith revolver

i went to the range one day with a couple buddies and one the way home we were talking guns and i was hearing one guy talk about a "old" 38 special Smith revolver that was "no good for anything but maybe a wall hanger. When we got to my friends house i asked if i could see the Smith. He produced it and lo and behold it was a Victory model 38 special in pretty good shape. he didn't like it cuz of the parked finish and had determined that it was "not safe to shoot". I took it home and checked it out real good then gave him a phone call and traded the victory model for a Beretta Model 21 22lr that i didn't like at all. The Smith was like new inside...i put 7-800 rds of 38 special thru it and would still have it if that guy with the like new 15-3 wouldn't have come along....Mike

Motorcycle trivia - Was the Harley 175 that two stroke street bike? I'd kinda like to have one of those. (If I was still into bikes.)

I don't have my first Smith. Doesn't bother nme, but I kind of wish I had the first smith I wanted. It was a brand new Model 10 tapered barrel for sale at Monkey Wards 35 years ago.

That was the bike. The year 1975 rings a bell about it, and I think it was AMF, but not sure of the AMF years. My brother got the bike for free and put a new carb in it and it ran great. It was for his girlfriend but he liked my gun better than he liked her I guess, and traded. I made $125 profit after selling the bike. Then bought the gun back for that $350. Now look what these guns go for. but the question is, how much do those bikes go for now?! Please do not tell me!
