I like my 5906, but....

Except for those of us old enough to have been raised in an era when two-digit Smith autos were .
But maybe you meant a 639? :p

Nope. I meant the 39-2.

...because no gun feels as good in your hand as a Hi-Power!

YEP but my pair of Gen-3 S&W's ( 4043 and a 1066 ) ain't bad;).
Owned my mid 90's MK III High Power for right at 20 years now simply because nothing else feels SO good in my hand!!

However this one is a close second in feeling right in my hand. We spent some time on the range together earlier today and the ol 4043 is the only other semi auto I shoot as constantly with as my old High Power! No tactical tupperware for this old guy!

PS the high power is my dress up carry gun ( the HP is always carried cocked and locked with one in the pipe and retention strap under the hammer like John Browning intended it to be!) and she sees regular range use.I however carry the SS 4043 just about every day.

My 5906 has Hogue grips on it. They seem a little too chunky feeling for me. (gun came with them) Are the factory grips a little smaller? Also are the curved backstrap, & straight backstrap grips interchangeable on all 5906's? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

The first handgun I ever bought was a Browning Hi Power. I've got plenty of S&W second and third generation semi-autos, and like them a lot. But, if I had to get by with only two handguns; they could easily be that Hi Power and a J-frame.

Interesting thread. I have to agree nothing feels as good to me as my Hi-Powers. Having said that I love third gen Smiths and enjoy my 5906 immensely. Up to this point I can honestly say I shoot Hi-Powers better than anything else I have shot. I do pretty well with the 5906, CZ75, P99AS, P226 but really struggle with Glocks, Beretta 92 and the HK USP. I did notice something interesting when shooting Hi Powers. A buddy and I have 8 between us from the late 60's to the present. They have different sights, grips, trigger quality etc. but as we passed them back and forth it became apparent they all shot great. The 69 model with the tiny nub sites, the different grips, it just didn't matter. We could just pick them up and shoot great groups with them. I really thought there would be more of a variance with the ones with better sites and triggers. It was quite eye opening.

I yanked the Hogues off mine for that very reason, because they were a VERY too chunky feeling for me. :D

I've swapped OEM backstraps around on my 5906 without problem, and would guess that they're the same.

Maybe one of our compadres with more than one of the thing will step in and confirm?

I dunno. I read a review of the new Sig 320 the other day and the reviewer said when he held the 320 it felt like he was holding a HP. He even posted pictures of each one superimposed on the other and they are pretty darn close size wise. Just sayin.

Hi- Power, Model 39, CZ-75

That's the way I would rank some of the most comfortable, natural feeling semi-autos ever made.

After shooting them, a Glock feels like a 2 by 4. I've tried to like the Glock and bought several but always got rid of them eventually. Sigs aren't too bad. Never owned an M&P.

The only semi-auto I still own is a Model 39. Maybe I'll take it to the range today to get reacquainted with it.

I've spent money having Glocks "tailored" over there at Robar ... and it made no difference.

I'd love to see what they feel like if they ever come out with a true single stack - something that takes 1911 mags. But, in the meantime, HP/CZ in a double stack, 39 series Smiths in the single stacks. Smith or 1911 framed 45s are "not as good as 39s, but still more comfy than the 5906. :D

Never liked the thin straight grips of the 3rd gens. Got tired of tracking down Hogue arched grips. Sold off my 3rd gens. I need something that has girth in the grip otherwise the grip moves around in my hand.

Funny the Glock is mentioned. I agree the 39 is like holding a peice of wet clay that just fits in your hand. Just like a SIG 210. BUT when it comes to doublestacks NOTHING feels better then a Glock 19. Oh by the way I did put one of these rubber "things" with fingergroves on my Glock. Not only is it the best firearm I've ever shot but it also fits PERFECT in my hand (and I haven't got Big hands). PS the singelstack Glock has been on the market for years (however not in a preferebel caliber).

Funny, I was also wondering why the 'G' word got mentioned on this forum!

Ha, ha  Well just because one owns a S&W or two I doesn't mean one haven't see the light. I got familuar with the Glock 26 and 19 in Iraq in 2003 and 2004 (after a life of having fired most any other auto........still doing that). The Glock 19 (if you like 9 mm) is just better then anything else.

SORRY got carried away and am Sterling the thread

When you're emotionally secure with the awesomeness that is the Smith, there's no embarrassment or shame to mentioning "lesser" firearms. I had plenty of plastic guns when I was a kid and don't look down - much - at those who've simply not matured to more adult tastes in firearms. :p

Ah. That makes more sense than "piece of wet Claus." :D

Now, about "Sterling" the thread....

Ha, ha sorry but "autospelling" is set up for my native language (Danish) on my IPad so sometimes words get changed without my notice :D

Your English is clearly better than my Danish, so I doubt I can complain much. :o

Except for, you know, the way the 5906 feels in my hand. Which is what this thread's all about anyway. :D
