I Like Sardines

My grand father got me to eating sardines when I was but a wee lad. Sardines in oil on soda crackers and a small coke. We would eat smoked herring, potted meat, vienna sausage on crackers. He all ways carried those items when he went fishing or hunting and even berry and mushroom picking. I followed him like a puppy.

Vienna sausage, AKA- Mississippi Round Steak. :D

Sardines, pigs feet, head cheese, pickled eggs, and beer. My Dad was a pretty nice guy if you could stand the smell. At least in the summer we could open all the windows.

I have a liking for sardines, but not all that often. I bought a bunch for my long term food storage since they are good for a while. I had to try one can out to see if I liked them, have to make sure when the SHTF that I am eating something I like!

I thought I was the only guy in the world who ate sardines. My grandfather got me hooked on Beach Cliff sardines in mustard as a kid, and today I eat everything from King Oscar to expensive imports whenever I get the chance. My wife won't even touch the cans so I am left to enjoy them all by myself. However, most of her family members also hate sardines, and give me grief if I talk about them. Her grandfather and grandmother worked in the sardine factories in Monterey Bay, CA back in the day, so I guess they have all had their fill of sardines.

This thread inspired me to try some King Oscar kippered herring and mediterranean style sardines. I think I will have them for lunch.

The Italian deli on 22nd Ave sometimes has anchovies filets in lemon and olive oil, they are the best!
Sardines are a favored treat too. But Smoked Mullet is the bomb!

Had a tin of the Mediterranean style King Oscars today. Wow! I think I have a new favorite. The olives and peppered oil really went well with butter crackers.

I only recommend the best! :D The peppers are red, safe for those who avoid jalapenos.

BTW, I saw your post about the Beach Cliff sardines in mustard. Purely by chance, I had those a couple of nights ago, and was very surpised at how good they were. And the grocer has them for a buck a can! I'll get more.

I like them, the canned smoked oysters also, if you haven't tried them already look for the sliced octopus in olive oil in the oval cans it is very good! In the Caribbean they thread five or six of the whole, gutted small sardines on skewers and fry them up crispy so you can eat the whole thing, very good, fried in lard of course!
Google 'smoked oyster dip" for some good recipes!

I like them all, but being a poor country boy I can my own snacks most of the time.

I put up salmon (coho/silver) mostly. I fillet & remove the skin, then can in natural juice with a little "Tapatio Hot sauce". Not enough hot sauce for fire, just a hint of spice + flavor.

I have canned smoked salmon too but for cracker-toppers, I prefer the Tapatio flavored, a light spice with a mellow tomato seasoning. I try to add to with seasoning, not cover up.

My preference is all grain saltines, a dollop of cream cheese, & a chunk of fish (sardine or salmon makes no-never-mind).

You don't hasta go to Spain

When in Spain, this is the way to eat sardines, grilled:

The west coase has a spring run of similar fish that are traditionally dip netted & used for subsistance purposes. In the lower 48 (the other America) they call 'em 'smelt'. Up here in Alaska they are called 'eulachon'.

They are rather oily & full flavored like sardines, herring, or anchovy (their big cousin mackerel too). Usually salted first & whether grilled, fried, or smoked till crisp, they keep well, provide ample protein & oil for energy as a guard against the cold when outside hiking or working.

Don't always go

Apparently most of us sometimes don't feel like subtle, delicate flavors but something that really lets you know what you are eating. In my younger days when I was down I would get the nastiest anchovy pizza I could find and a pitcher of beer. Something like that won't let you dwell on your troubles. I suggested that to my brother and he acknowledged that it worked for him, too.

When I first moved to FL smoked mullet was sold almost everywhere. I couldn't believe people eat this! I was using it as crawfish bait in La. before I moved there.
Mike, there is a restaurant in Pasadena near the water, that my friends eat smoked mullet from there on a daily basis.

Smoked mullet? And some like pickled shad... I use them for bait too.. For Dungeness crab or oversize white sturgeon. CB
