I have a wool felt crusher hat that has been my camping hat for years. It started out brown but I don't really know what you would call the color it is now.

Last month we were camping, just sitting around the fire and she pops up with:

Maybe we should think of getting you a new hat.

Why? I asked.

Well, she replied, That one is getting kinda faded and weathered.

I kinda think that is the point of a camping hat, says I. Some people buy weathered looking outdoor clothing, others prefer to let them weather naturally.

She did NOT look convinced.

If that's your worst complaint, she must be a gem.

In my case, the question is: "Why do you need another gun? They all look alike anyway?"

My response is: "Why do you need another horse? You already have 7 and you can only ride one at a time anyway?"

It takes a while for a good hat to be broken in. When one of my hats gets to the point where Miss Judy won't let me wear it in public, I get another one. It only takes a few trips with the pack string to get a hat feeling good.:D

In his memoir, which I found in 1995 after he passed on and published for those of us who remained, my dad wrote of his shock at discovering one day, after he retired in 1970, that my mom had thrown out his old knit watch cap that he had worn throughout the Pacific as a Marine in WWII.

Guess he never got over it...

Try this

I had a ball cap that I wore for years. It was perfectly seasoned. She ran it through the washing machine. Still married, bit it was touch and go for a while.

Yeah, washing machines are no go for ball caps. Try running it through the dishwasher instead. Comes out clean and not floppy.

Believe it or not you can run ball caps, foam and cotton duck in the top loader without deforming the brim.
My caps from city work would quickly smell like landfill so when I did my loads I'd throw them in the middle of the wash cycle then pull them our before they were spun.
Rinsed with a hose then hung on a fence they were good to go.
Mrs. didn't like me using her boofie pad in the shower and got no dishwasher.

I had a 100% Hudson bay wool blanket that my cousin had at military school around 1950. I had it at the same school in 1962. Came home one day and wife had ran it through the washing machine. Blanket was about the size of a bath towel due it shrinking. Marriage was a bit rough for a few days.

I think MULE PACKER's hat is past due for an oil change.

This thread reminds me of something done out of kindness that blew up. My friend was a mountain lion guide with dogs and horses. Over his career he carried a Smith model 19 with a 6" barrel. It started out new but after nearly 30 years there was zero bluing left and the grips were well worn and broken and glued and taped back together. His career winding down, his brother sneaked the revolver out of his truck, had it re-blued and new stocks. Totally destroyed his entire "story". He was so livid that he never carried the gun again and even though it has been over 10 years, it is not a subject you want to bring up in mixed company.

Gosh, that brings up memories. Back about1955 the surplus store in town had ANZAC hats on sale. Looked like a Stetson but made in Australia. Made of wool and pinned up on the left side. I called it my lucky hat. Wore the damn thing for many years till it finally bit the dust. Had it for over 50 years, I gave it honeral internment at the old camp site.

So? Get a new hat......

....wear it when she's around and wear the old stand-by when she's not.,

I know they've done TV shows on this. One I remember was a girl trying to be helpful cleaned out a guy's coffee pot. which was the last thing ANYBODY should have done.

A guy had a coat for years, it had been adventuring, been in barfights and had what appeared to be blood on it. Another helpful woman either threw it out or had it cleaned, I don't remember which.

My wife tossed my M65 field jacket a buddy gave me. He had worn it in VN.
It was my go to jacket. Work, camping, etc. It was getting a little shabby. Frayed, some tears, burns, but I loved that jacket.
If I could find a genuine M65 to replace it, I would.

There are quite a few vintage ones for sale on eBay.
