Ritz Camera is the best place I've found for digital cameras. I don't know how much you want to spend but.......the Nikon D40 is one of the very best. Buy an additional memory card and the 2 lens deal is a good one.

I'd check dealcam.com to get an idea of prices vs specs and then check out my local Wal-mart/Best Buy/Target/etc. I've personally had good luck with HP (several thousand pics over 4+ years, finally started turning itself off and was old enough that made more sense to replace than fix), and decent luck with Samsung (good product, but lousy tech support)

Prices have come down quite a bit in the last couple years. Resolutions that were at the extreme high end three years ago (10+ megapixel) can now easily be had for under $200 in a point&shoot form factor.

b&h camera in new york...one of the largest distributors in the world...as a rule...they beat about anyones price....they have new and used

I just looked at that, it seems like a great camera just a little pricey, I got laidoff from an assistant supervisor positon and now my wife works the big job while I flip burgers at McDonalds, talk about humiliating, but anyway, I think I may have about $450 to spend maybe.

Digital cameras don't really hold their value. What you pay a premium for today is soon on clearance since it is outmoded. Pick a reputable brand and try Target or Walmart. Best Buy is also an option, but they're annoying sometimes when it comes to getting opinions about what to buy. It's 50-50 that you'll be misinformed.

I've got a Canon Powershot that seems adequate. I don't think it cost more than 200 dollars.

I'd suggest a middle tier model - unless you need it for professional reasons - simply because of the "out moded in a few years" thing mentioned above. That way you're in a better position to simply upgrade later on.

Well I want it to last her a while, I am pulling this money from my savings acct. and my mod 442 fund, so she had BETTER know I love her, lol

I love my Kodak C8785 8.0 megapixel camera. I picked it up on Ebay for $179 a few years ago and they're even cheaper now since they're old. The current version of this camera is still only around $200 or less. I like that it takes every kind of photo I need it to take, including close ups of guns.

I'll let a few pics in various modes speak for themselves and you can decide.

My 12 year old daughter shooting trap for the first time. Notice the ejecting shell and the clay busting in mid-air:

The 8.0 megapixels can really pick up intricate details of the subject matter:

It's great for getting pretty close up:

This is the sepia tone setting for old west looking photos:

It's great outdoors too:

What do you want it for? Mostly snapshots? More serious work?

For my serious photography, I own two Digital SLRs with the works. Multiple lenses, flashes, lighting fixtures.... but I'm quite a bit into photography... these cost... well.. a lot.

For my around the house / going out snapshots, I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-H2 and a DSC-W290.

I highly recommend the Sony Cybershots. My first Digital was a Cybershot that I got in 2000. My father now uses it and it works like the day I got it. My other two are about 3 years and 1 year old. Both great. They are easy to use, reliable, and usually have decent functions for a low price. I believe most or all Cybershots have Carl Zeiss lenses, which are very good. I even won a $1,000 photo contest with a pic I snapped on day using one of my cheaper Cybershots!

Check out the link to the Sony site. It takes you to the Cybershot line.

I'd say head down to wal mart and pick out a Cybershot. I've had three Cybershots (four Sonys all together) and have nothing bad to say... especially for the price!

By the way.. at least you manned up and took the McDonalds job.

it took a lot out of me to take it, and it took me nearly 3 months to get it. I really need something better but I dont know anyone in alabama, but I figure with all the hell we have been through this year I am overshooting the 20$ limit by a little to let her know I appreciate her support and probibly setting myself back on a 442 by about 2 years

Some information that would help in a recommendation:

Price Range? ...oops, just saw you posted that...$450
Digital SLR with options for interchangeable lenses/external flash options, et al vs point/shoot?
Skill level of your wife?
Final output: size of paper enlargement?, just digital output to the computer screen?
Subject mater? portraits, low light, action/sports, landscapes
Willing to buy used, or locked in to new/warranty?

On fleabay there's a Canon 10d and lens with 2 days left with the bidding up to 100. These can be had for around 200 in good condition. Yeah yeah yeah it's "only 6.2" megapixels but that will get you to 8x12 enlargements. I'd challenge anyone to tell the difference between 6.2 vs 8 vs 10mp at this degree of enlargement. The body on the 10d is built like a tank, as is the shutter.

It has a fully auto mode as well as "portrait" "sports" and "landscape" mode. For close up, you can get a cheap set of extension rings and just use a cheap $75 lens. There is an on camera flash.

Read up a little on the 10d, it can be operated as simple as a point and shoot yet has the capability to operate as a studio camera.

Some here on the forum may know more of the Nikon system than I do. As such, they may have a Nikon similar to the 10d in terms of digital "obsolescence" and bang for the buck.

As far as the sony/minolta cybershot line...+1 and will be my wife's next camera. I just thought I'd give you a little more to think about.

+1 for the Nikon. I have a D-60, and it's a great camera! Yes, a little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

I got a Canon AE-1 in late 70's, with 5-6 lens. Still use it, but film is expensive.

When I retired om disability in 06', I got a Sony 100 with 2 lens. Cost a pretty penny, but every 20 years I get a new camera. Anyway I've taken 5-6000 pictures and it works great! Actually, it takes pictures by itself.

You can get a great camera for 200 dollars, and in 2-3 years upgrade when you save more money. Technology moves so fast, whatever you get, will be surpassed in weeks.

Second Anniversery and you're getting her a digital camera????? Setting the bar a bit high for the third and subsequent ones aren't we??? Take it from a pro-you want to work up gradually to the camera-that should be around year 20-for your second anniversery you should still be on the "mushy card-even though we're poor, I'll love you always" stage. If you must have a camera, buy it for yourself and let her use it. If you don't believe me just ask Dick Burg :D

If you have no experience with digital cameras, understand that many are quite different!than film cameras in one regard. There can be a delay between the time you press the shutter button & the time it actually takes the photo. This delay is VERY agrivating and if you are trying to take action shots, you can be off time by a fraction of a second. This doesn't sound like much, but I have a dog that will not pose for a photo, so my pictures of her are usually a blur. I haven't bought a camera in a few years, but check this out as my father in law just bought a Sony and it still has a delayed shutter. I'm sure there is a technical term for this...
I'm sure a $450.00 camera today has a faster shutter delay than a camera at half the price, but better to know what to look for.

Check out QVC for one of their photography segments.

You'll get a pretty good description of functions and capabilities and a camera that will meet whatever your price range is.

You'll also have their return policy if you find that you make a mistake with the first purchase, and can trade up or trade sideways for something else.

Most of the better cameras, especially the SLRs, have very little delay.

Please, please listen to the above. By the way, what did you get her for the first?

I thought the first 10-15 anniversary gifts were...

Lingerie!!! If your supposed to go for something more classy than that I'm in trouble. We're coming up on our 9th and we are going to St Maarten for a week. That wasn't really the anniversary present, but it will work now that I think of it. Then, I'm going to get her(me) a new gun.:D

Find a good new but slightly older digital camera with at least 6 megapixels that has good ratings and try to find it on e-bay. I just bought a good one on e-bay a couple of months ago but I don't remember what it was. I will try to remember when I get home tonight. I don't think I even paid $200 for it and it takes better pictures than I would have ever thought. As mentioned above, you don't need the highest MP camera on the market unless you are planning on printing life size photos. A good 10MP camera will print 18" prints without enlarging.

I was gonna get her a remington 700, but my sister in law killed that idea!:)

Remember you need to get a class 6 memory chip, too. Keep enough money left over for that. (this improves on the "shutter lag" mentioned above).

For point and shoot cameras, we have bought Olympus cameras, mostly the Stylus line, since before digital happened. We still like their cameras.

10.1 megapixel for $149. Olympus at Costco. Until you move up to the SLR (outside of your price range) then you need nothing better than this. In fact, you might not be able to find anything better... just comparable.

It has image stabilization, 7x zoom. Uses xD instead of SDHC (edit to add: uses microSD, I didn't read the whole ad), but still better than Memory Stick (take that! you Sony Cybershot folks! heh). Actually, nothing against Cybershots, I just happen to prefer Olympus.

And you can still tell her it cost a bundle, if you want! :)
