I don't know why that would be a problem--from a recoil standpoint. I mounted an older model pro point on a S&W 460 with a 5" barrel last year- took two buck with it at more than 60 yrds each. Never had a problem with the scope. With the proper mount you should'nt have a problem either. Oh, by the way--I asked on the forum too before mounting .
I'd have a good gunsmith look at it and offer his opinion. It may be possible to drill and tap the rib and attach Weaver bases, but you risk busting the rib loose under recoil.
Grover, not sure if you'll be able to find anything for your shotgun, but a google search for "side-by-side shotgun red dot mount" did pull up this Field and Stream review.

There are some interesting things offered here. Nothing exactly for you application but a clever lad might be able to modify one of those shot shell carriers that has the picatinny rail on it. Might actually turn out pretty cool with your extra rounds in a handy spot?

oh, I meant single shot, it is an old Savage and there is no rib. I have been searching alot to try to find something that might work or could be modified but so far I got nuthin. I will check out the links provided and maybe something will strike me as doable. I thought about a barrel clamp mount but would be afraid to mishape the barrel. Thanks everyone.
now this may work, turn it around and fasten it to the foregrip. it would lay over the breech end of the barrel and pivot with the barrel..

If it's an old break open single shot you might be able to find a suitable clamp that will fit around the chamber area forward of the locking lug(s). You'd probably have to relieve the wood on the forearm. Just an idee...

I was concerned about crushing the barrel or chamber area, or am I being to paranoid?

Was thinking of some barrel clamp thingy myself, but had the same concern Grover. I highly doubt that you manitain ANY kind of zero without getting it pretty dang tight. Was also thinking that you have to be able to close the thing as well so a clamp would most likely have to be foward of the break.
Yeah it would end up being like a scout mount, that piece I showed above would fasten to the front handstock and tilt with the barrel. I am sure thinking about it. Now that I have customized a few different guns I just cant seem to leave well enough alone!!! LOL

A gunsmith could probably silver solder a piece of rail on it for the red dot....you could mount a red dot anywhere and be ok, I think.
If you gonna po boy it, U could use good ole J B weld !!! Then you could use any old aluminum rail.
That stuff does the job.
