I pulled into Nazareth,

Levon Helm was the father in Coal Miners Daughter and the old gunsmith from Tenn in The Shooter with Mark Wahlberg.

My favorite Levon Helm lines:

Mr. Rate: That's how a conspiracy works. Them boys on the Grassy Knoll they were dead within three hours, buried in the damned desert, unmarked graves out past Terlingua.

Nick Memphis: You know this for a fact?

Mr. Rate: Still got the shovel...

going to have that tune running through my head all night now. The Band, doesn't get much better than that! See the man with stage fright, just standin up there with all his might.......

Music from Big Pink.

This is the house with Dylan and The Band lived in Saugerties NY.

Both Helm and Danko are buried in Woodstock cemetery, and one of the main roads into the Town of Woodstock is called Leon Helm Boulevard.
Woodstock NY is just about the same way it was back in the day.

Another vote for that great line from the line Shooter: "Still got the shovel...."

THE WEIGHT

MANY artists did a cover of it. Aretha Franklins was very good, but what else would you expect. THE BAND owned it, but am not 100% sure they wrote it. THE LAST WALTZ is one of my favorite albums also. If you liked the last waltz, check out the Duane Allman anthology (vol 1), & the no nukes concert

I believe I remember reading that Helm wrote the song--need to check that.

Actually, Robbie Robertson is "credited" with writing The Weight Mike. Interestingly, Danko, Manuel and Helm sing the verses and RR only bits of the chorus. RR "wrote" most of the band's song but the others always maintained that the writing was collaborative. That was a major reason for the group's break up. Song writers get the royalties!

Helm went on to perform The Weight many times. Here's, to my knowledge, the last time he performed it (with the band Wilco). You can tell he is suffering from a relapse of his throat cancer and can't finish his verse. The woman who "steps in" to take over the vocals is his daughter, Amy Helm. It's a tearful passing of the torch. Not a particularly good version of the song (IMHO) but memorable for Helm fans.

Robertson commented on Helm's death stating that he was (among other things) a great writer!

For my end, every time I try out a new guitar or amp I always play the intro and first few bars of The Weight. I know afterwards if the set up has a the right vibe!

I'm kinda partial to these guys

I've seen the bright lights of Memphis and the Commodore Hotel
And, underneath a street lamp I met a Southern Belle
Well, she took me to the river where she cast her spell
And, in that southern moonlight she sang the song so well
