I went to the range today with my agency to qualify with my duty weapon. My duty weapon is a Glock 22. We shoot a standard course of fire from 3,7,15 and 25 yards,I shot a 97.2 out of 100. Not my best score and I was really mad. When my captain saw my score he ragged me and said," Damn Hanna you need to carry your cannon full time, you shoot better with that freeking revolver!" I told him I would gladly carry my 625 full time but our agency requires us to be issued weapons. On the other hand they let us carry what ever we want as a back up gun so I carry 2 extra guns on duty. My 625 stays in my vest and my 642 stays on my ankle..I guess once a revolver guy a revolver guy....OR AM I JUST OLD SCHOOL????

Any other cops or people out there shoot a revolver better than a semiauto???
My carry revolver is pictured on the top with night sights and a 3" barrel.

panamajack310,

I feel your pain. My agency strictly forbids .357 ammo, even in a .357 revolver. If they allowed us to carry actual .357 ammo, I'd either be breaking out my 4" GP100 or go looking for a good, used 681 for duty use. I have absolutely no problems with my current Glock 21 duty gun, but I like revolvers better. Not enough better, however, to carry strictly .38+P on duty.

On the other hand, my Dept is pretty good about duty guns. Policy says that we can carry anything, so long as caliber is at least .38 Spl for duty use, no magnums, no single action only (which also rules out a good 1911) and it is of "quality manufacture" and is approved by one of the Instructors (namely me, since I'm the only Instructor that knows anything besides Glocks). Off duty/backup is the same, except it also allows .380. If you don't want to buy a gun and want something Dept issued, you get a Beretta 92FS. I'm not sure I'd want to work at a Dept that is that strict about a duty gun since I'm so used to our policies and carrying pretty much anything I want and can qualify with.

I am not a cop but if I were, I would want to carry my 3" 625 Model of 1989 as my duty weapon. It is powerful, accurate, and reliable.

I'm issued a Glock 35, we can carry any BUG as long as it's a Glock in .40s&w, I have a 27. I shoot my revolvers better than the Glocks. The last time I qualified I shot a better score with my 27 than with the 35. (Darn NY trigger in the 35)

I started my LE career with a 4" model 64 HB backed up by a RB 36. I eventually went thru a slew of auto loaders to finally settle on an issued Glock 19. My back-up has changed over the years but is has almost always been a j-frame, currently it is a 637-2 with a bobbed hammer. We are only allowed 1 off-duty/back-up so my 637-2 is it.

(Darn NY trigger in the 35)
With a punch and maybe 60 seconds of work you could fix that. The "NY trigger" is just an extra V shaped plastic part with a spring that adds extra tension. Yank it out and you will have the original setup. I know, I know, unpaid vacations suck. But if you were ever so inclined it is an easy fix. I don't know how well it would work but you could tell them it just fell out while you were giving it a good cleaning.

If I were a peace officer I'd love to be able to carry this:

Even loaded with specials it will rock.

If your dept. will let you, Buffalo Bore's 158 grain lead semi wadcutter hollow point .38 Special +P gets to 1100 - 1150 fps out of a 4" gun.

That's almost right up there with 158 grain .357s

So how exactly do you carry the 3" 625? I also have a 3" 625 and I'd be happy to carry it on the vest but I haven't figured out the best way to do it. The two possibilities are a pocket sewn on the front or in a holster under the arm. I'm not sure which way would be better. My 60 easily drops into a pocket I had sewn on the front but the 625 is considerably bigger and heavier and would need a special pouch.

The only thing my issue Sig is good for is dry fire practice. It saves wear and tear on my revolvers.

I've always shot wheelguns better than autos. What's weird is one of the best shooters on the dept. can't hit squat with a revolver. Go figure.

I'm going to qualify with my 610 tomorrow so I can carry it off duty.

I carry my 625 in the front pocket your extra trauma plate goes in. It fits perfect. I carry it there for a few tactical reasons.1. The trauma plate is good but having my 625 there I can get to it easly if I need it. 2. If for some reason I am held hostage and some one pats me down they will find my BUG on my ankle and assume that is all I have. No one ever feels your chest. 3. If someone was to hit me in the chest their hand is now broken and wont work. 4. If I get put down onto the ground I can stay slumped over and pull my back up with no worries.

My agency uses the Gatorhawk. See the front pocket just above the gatorhawk picture. Your 625 fits in there like a glove.

My Dad was a LEO for nearly 40 yrs. He either carried a Chief's Special or K-frame depending if he was in a suit or uniform. He wouldn't touch any of my autos on a bet. I like Sigs but it's the difference between hitting a paper plate at 15 yds rapid fire or putting them on top of each other with a revolver in the center of the plate.

I remember one day at the range, he was shooting my K38 Masterpiece and I was shooting my P229 .40. I handed him one of my targets for his approval and he laid it across his chest and smiled, "That'll do the job."

I work for two departments. At my full-time department I carry a Beretta 96FS because its department issue and I'm required to carry it. We are supposed to be switching to Glocks this year (we will see if that survives the budget crunch), also in .40S&W (much to my disappointment).

At the department I work for part-time, I provide my own duty weapon. At the moment its a S&W M&P45, the .45ACP being my favorite semi-auto chambering and my preference for a self-loader on-duty.

I use the same BUG at both departments, a S&W 37-2 DAO Airweight with CT405 grips.

I love a good revolver, but I like a .45ACP pistol as a duty weapon.

I've got nothing to add other than to thank all you guys in LE and the military for the work you all are doing. It doesn't get said enough.

Hey Conchmariner, thanks for the recognition. I too am a wheelgunning street cop. My chief is good people. He issues us the plastic fantastic but as a Lt, and firearms instructor I get to carry what I qualify with. I carry a RB model 66 with a 3"686 barrel backed up by a Airweight Bodyguard in off side front pocket.

I wish, Wyatt! Dept issues the duty ammo and I'm stuck with what they issue. I know why they do it (a previous Dept I worked for did not issue ammo; as a result, most of they guys were carrying WWB FMJ ammo since it was "cheap") but I'm not all warm and fuzzy about their choices in duty ammo. Issued ammo is as follows;

.38- Win Silvertip 125gr +P
9mm- Win 115gr Silvertip
.40- Win White Box JHP
.45- Win White Box 230gr JHP

They aren't necessarily bad choices, but there are so many better choices out there now. They choose these loadings because they are "cheap" and because "we all KNOW that hollowpoints don't open up anyway, so why buy expensive ones?" The only saving grace here is that I hear and have read that the Win White Box .45 JHP actually is pretty good about expanding reliably.

My choice would be either Rem or Win 125gr .357 JHP or, if I stuck to my G21 duty gun, I've heard good things about Win SXT 230gr JHP. I've already consoled myself to emptying the cylinder on my snubbie .38 backup weapon if I ever need it, Win's Silvertip doesn't have a great rep in snubbies.

bub, I have to be blunt, but your department's firearms and ammo policy flat out sucks.

They are stuck in the 70s.

I agree, that 125 grain .38 Special sucks and I would not carry it either. Would they even consider Remington's R38S12 lead semi wadcutter HP +P? Tell them at least the FBI used to issue it.

That would be my bare minimum.
