I just picked up a like new RSR 6690 and went straight to the range. I really hate the 3rd Gens! They shoot to point of aim, the sights are clear, they shoot anything and everything, and I couldn't make it malfunction to save my life. I guess I'll keep it. :)

I'm not that familiar with the 6690 or RSR, but for $275 OTD, and with the performance it has displayed already, I'm inclined to believe it has to be well built. It is a DA/SA with a de-cocker/safety and a magazine disconnect. Not thrilled about the disconnect, but for now it's not a deal breaker. This 9mm shoots as soft as any I've seen for a while, and the finish is pristine. As soon as the battery for the camera charges, I'll get some pics.

From your stand point, was this a decent deal?

Thats a hell of a gun for $275 OTD nice find!!!

Very bad gun.I hate them too. That's why I won't ever get rid of mine, I don't want to burden anyone else with having to own such a bad gun. Better never sell yours either. We have a mission to save others from such a fate. I'm glad you have this one in custody. Keep a close eye on it, and I'd make it work for it's keep too.

Oh so true! I've been a failure in the past, allowing my 4053 to escape :(, but I'm working on getting it and others back under adult supervision and control. Just a law abiding citizen doing my part for gun control.

Way to go Gunny, don't let her out of your sight! This one almost slipped back into the weapons market where some poor unknowning sod would have got taken; however, I caught her just in time, one-less 3rd gen to worry about.

If that deal were any better you'd have to hire a defense attorney:D Enjoy the heck outta that beauty!

The worst thing about third Gens is....... I can hardly find any around here. ;)

Gunny 4053,
First of all you DID steal that pistol. The 6690 is a transitional gun built for RSR Distributors and I am unsure how many were made but it should be listed in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson's. The slide and barrel were left over in the parts bins from the 2nd generation 669 pistol and as they began the transition to the 6906 they made new frames and marked them 6690 and used the older top half to make new guns.

I have a 6450 which was a 645 slide and barrel put on a 3rd generation frame before the 4506 was in full production. The serial number on mine is RSR002* which indicates that it was pretty early in production for that RSR special order.

Enjoy your 6690! It will shoot as well as any 6906 and it is much rarer than the 669 and the 6906 models. The other big difference between your pistol and the 6906 is that it is not fitted with the Novak low mount sights found on the 3rd generation pistols.

Forsmithers, Thanks, good information. I've done a little more research on these and found some of what you told me, plus an indication they are classified as "scarce". Based on that classification, the poster indicated there were only between 400 and 900 of these produced. Makes me wish the box and papers had been with it.:(

Now I have to find some more mags and a good holster since I can't do anything to improve this gun (I'm a project gun kinda guy. Love fixing them up).

I really hate 3rd gens. I'm trying to acquire as many as l can to use as a boat anchor. Please feel free to dispose of any you want to dump... in care of me! :)

Does anyone know if grips for the 6906 will fit the 6690? Just curious, cause it's nice to have options (Hogue and the like).

Gunny, I even went as far as taking one of S&W's 3rdGen Economy models the rarely seen 909 single stack, an having S&W to put a full ambi-safety on her, so she would be more useful since I'm left handed.

idp4570, you sir have done a fine job keeping the world safe for others. Removing 3rd Gens and high cap mags from those who would be corrupted by such temptations. ;)

Seriously, those are some beautiful firearms. :)

Here's the one I allowed to escape, the infamous 4053 TSW. If you see it, you should detain it for the good of others.
