I bought my first M&P 15 sport during black friday, and boy let me tell you, I never thought the AR world would be so addicting!!! To make a long story short, the first gen M&P 15 I gave it to my father and I bought the new gen 2 that has the forward assist and the dust cover. I got the bright idea of changing the A2 sights and putting a free float rail and a low profile gas system. Here is what it looks like. I thought at first removing the A2 sights was going to be a daunting task but it wasn't. Just make sure to have the right tools to do it, that is the key to successfully removing the A2 sights. The only thing I'm missing for my M&P 15 is the magpul buttstock ctr, the pistol grip, the angle grip and the front sights.

I will also put my 300. blackout that I built from scratch. The 300. is the first AR I have ever built, won't be my last. My next project is going to be a AR 10. The 300. blackout is the FDE one.

Glad you are happy with it looks good too

I prefer the A2 sights and judging by the lack of carbine length uppers with A2 profile - I am in the minority.

Too many years of training I guess - I find the A frame is quicker on target for me (could be my background in clay target games is part of it) and hits are faster and more consistent - than looking for those sights on a gas block.

Whoa.... this is exactly what I logged on to research this morning. Wow, so I love it and have a few questions. What free floating rail is that? Rifle length, right? And what gas block did you use? Alsowhat is tht extension hanging below the rail on the tan one? hmmmm....
MBUS front sight... yeah, I like it a lot!
I've been reading that the pins are tapered and only come out one way. so pointing at a bad guy, do the pins get driven out from your left to right, or the other way?
I love the look. Thanks for posting.

I went with a Aeroprecision Quad rail, they actually have M-lok and Key-mods as well. I personality like the quad rail look. It does make the rife a little heavier but, it's all personal preference. The rifle length is a 16" barrel and I just got the 15" quad rail. The gas block that I used was a Aeroprecision .750 low profile. No what's hanging from the FDE is a angle grip. The taper pins are driven out from left to right. I would measure to see which end is the smallest before hammering away. I'm going to give you a tip, use fire on the taper pins, they will literally fall out once you bang on them a couple times. I had a mini torch and I just heated up the taper pins for a few second and they fell right out. The only problem I had and "hence" that's why I said "make sure you have the right tools" was taking off the delta ring barrel nut!! I didn't have a barrel vice holder so there was no way in hell that thing was coming out. I literally tired everything!! The next day I went to BassPro and bought the darn thing and the delta ring barrel nut came loose in 2 second!! So make sure you have the appropriate tools for the job. I'm putting a couple links in the bottom so you could see what I used. If you have any other questions let me know man. I'm happy to help.

All of these are still carbine uppers... they just added a longer hand guard... still 16" barrel with carbine length gas system under the tube.

As far as being quicker... the sights are the same height as the old A2 style sites... really no difference that I can see that would make one quicker than the other.

Minus having the right tools is there any other advice on changing out the gas block? I'm planning on changing mine out for one that has a rail on it for a flip up front sight.

Also what is the optics you have on the 300??

Once you get the FSP pins out, the rest is gravy.

If I wanted to go lower budget with this type of setup could I get the low profile gas block and go with a rifle length hand guard from magpaul and fold up sights?

No, the Magpul handguards need the front handguard cap. Also, how would you mount the front sight?

How does your rear flip up clear the optic sitting over it?

Is the angled foregrip from Strike Industries? I just put their new s-link curved foregrip on my AR. I haven't shot with it yet.

Ok so if I added the Front Handguard Cap for Free Float then I can get the low profile gas block and go with a rifle length hand guard from magpaul and fold up sights on my stock M and P 15 sport?

Free float hand guards do not use a handguard cap. And again, how would you attach the front flip sight to a Magpul handguard? They are not railed on top.

I had the same thing in mind on my 10.25" Rock River... I went with Yankee Hill Specter length free floating quad rail and a low profile gas block.

I later added the red dot and krinkov muzzle brake.

Magpul handguards are designed to be installed just like your Sport handguard, sandwiched between the delta ring and handguard cap. The Magpul carbine length handguard is designed to use with a carbine length gas system like on your Sport. Midlength handguard with mid length gas systems. Rifle length handguard with rife length gas system. Get the notion of using a Magpul rifle length handguard with your carbine gas system Sport out of your head. Ain't going to happen. Maybe this vid will help. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCLvirSprEs[/ame]

A free float handguard is different. It only attaches to a barrel nut which will be supplied by the handguard manufacturer. If you buy a rifle length free float handguard for your Sport you will toss your A2 front sight and handguard cap in the parts box. That's why you'll need a low profile gas block that slips under the handguard. And yes, as long as you pick a handguard with rail on top you can install a folding sight on it.
