I looked up loads at the Hodgdons site and my load books for 240gr Lswc in 44 Special.
It lists the recipe for HP38 but nothing on W231??

Under 44 Magnum they both are listed and exactly the same.

Soooo I see no problem with using the W231 with the HP38 data for my 44 Special Yes???

HP38 and W231 are the same base bulk powder bought by the companies, however data for HP38 has historically been lighter than W231 by a couple 10ths of a grain in manuals using the same bullets and components.

If you look at burn rate charts you will see that HP38 always precedes W231 though they are right next to one another but that may be an alphabetical convention.

A logical conclusion would be that there is some very slight difference and most likely it is inconsequential. If HP38 is very slightly faster than W231, using HP38 data with W231 will not cause any problems. The potential results may be slightly less pressure and velocity.

I was a commercial reloader back in the 1980s and 90s... I used to buy WW231 or HP38 by the drum depending on who had what cheaper at the time. One drum had a HP38 label on it and when I pealed it off there on the fiber drum was stenciled Winchester 231...

Winchester 296 and H110 are also the same powder in different cans...

Thanks for the confirmation. I was pretty sure it was and had been a thread on it but just needed to be sure. I was odd that that the load data has it for some bullets but not others.
I guess they just like to keep us guessing.

OCD,
There is no reason to take the word of a third party on this. Give them a call:
If you have a safety problem or concern - DO NOT EMAIL - CALL US DIRECTLY 7:00am to 5:30pm Central Monday-Thursday : 913-362-9455

Many of us have but I don't think their line has been disconnected since!
