I'm looking for a 29 6.5" and I don't really want to spend a grand. Is it possible to get a bit of holster wear but otherwise great condition pre-lock for 750 or so?

Anything is possible, but I might expect to wait a while before finding a 29 6-1/2 inch for $750. If you don't care if the gun is pinned and recessed and are happy with newer production (no reason not to be) you can find new Model 29 Classics in the configuration you want for $900. Were it me, and I intended to shoot it, I'd get the new gun. That's the only way I know to assure that the revolver is in "otherwise great condition." Good luck on your hunt.

Cool, thanks! I'm considering the classic and I've seen a few a tiny bit under 900 and it may come to that but gun shows and local sellers are a regular check.

Yup, they're out there. As evidence just take a look at all the newest M29 threads lately and almost all of them have found good deals on them, including myself recently. I just picked up this little 6" beauty last week for $750

PM sent with a possible lead.

Thanks for the PM and that's a solid example - seriously considering it! Just a question for the group. Someone near me posted a new in box 29-2 unfired 6.5". It is in the wood box with tools all new. He is asking a LOT for it, I think. What would that be worth realistically? I'm gonna shoot it so NIB to me might be a waste but the blueing on those older models is, well, exceptional...

I have one in the for sale section as we speak.

The model 29 is a gun I wanted for most of my adult life. Unfortunately I was never in the right place at the right time.

When I lived in FL I used to frequent the gunshops in the area on my lunch hour. One day the clerk asked me what I was looking for, I told him a model 29 used in good shape. He told me they had none but my timing was good because around tax time someone always brought one in to sell.

About 3 weeks later on my daily stop the clerk was excited when I stopped in. Said they had just taken a 629-1 6" in to sell. It wasn't a 29 but it was in nice shape. The gunsmith told me in FL I'd be better off with a stainless gun. Long story short, I bought it for $450. At 55 years old I owned my first .44 Magnum!

Because I frequented 3 different shops 2 weeks later one of the other shops told me they had just taken in a model 29-2 6" to sell. This was the gun I had always lusted for. It was in excellent shape and looked as if it hadn't really been used much. I bought this one too.

I still have both and like both of them equally. Both were purchased for $450 in 2004.

Because it's tax time now you're odds of finding what you want are pretty good if you look and have money in pocket. The 6.5" will not be easy to find but a 6" should be.

It's all timing. Spend some time in your LGS and let them know what you're looking for. Eventually you will find one this way.

Joed - Man those are purdy. The local guy wants 1400 for a NIB 19-2 with tools and box but the flocking has to be redone/replaced. It's a beautiful specimen but since I'll probably put 500 rounds through it within a month of getting it, it doesn't make sense to pay a premium. I do really want the 6.5", though so I'm going to go ahead and get a new one with the lock hole. It peeves me to no end that Smith leaves that dang thing in there on the classic but I'll get over it after the first 6 put a smile on my face.

I found one on GB for 940ish shipped (29 classic) with presentation box (are they shipping those with new?) so I'll go that route unless I can find cheaper. I don't care about the box but I'll put it on ebay and hopefully get a few bucks and drive the gun price down.

I should not have taken my dad's old 19-3 out of the safe to shoot it. Since then I've bought a 686 3-5-7 series 5", Model 67 4", and I'm going to order a 67 2.5" and, of course this 29 classic. Do they lace bluing with heroin or something?

kenneu, thanks, these are my favorites in my collection of .44's. The 44 bug bit me hard.

I have nothing against the new guns either and I own one. I had a friend here who owned an LGS. One night I stopped in and he had a S&W MG for sale on consignment. There I was heading home with my third .44 Mag that I picked up for $299. It shoots as well as any S&W revolver I own. Never a problem with it either. I could care less about the lock, this one is a great shooter too. Heck yes I would buy a new model 29.

I took a look at that new 29, beautiful gun. If you get the new 29 I want to see pictures or I'll be disappointed.

The last new issue S&W had that I wanted was the remake of the model 24. Came pretty close to buying one with the nickel finish.

In addition to the .44 Mag I have a fondness for the .44 Spl and still own 3 of them, a model 24-3 with 4", a 624 with 6.5" and another 624 in 4".

I'll post up a pic when it gets here... about a week out.
