Identification HELP please

Hello All,
This is my first post and first S&W. It was my grandpas off duty/back-up weapon(NYPD). It is a .38 Chiefs Special (Mod 36) serial # 121XXX.
I was wondering if anyone could pin point year of production and any other information would be greatly appreciated.
He carried it up till about 10 yrs ago then handed it down to me. I have already taken it to the range and it is a sweet little shooter. No +P ammo I believe, only the standard stuff.

Looks like it probably shipped in 1957.

After doing some reading I have come to the conclusion that this is probably one of the last guns to leave factory without a model number. Am I right?

If it shipped in '57, that is likely. Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, BTW! Don't worry too much about posting in the wrong forum. The mods will take care of moving it for you. As soon as you can, post some pictures. We love pictures. Just for grins, take off the grips and see if the SN is stamped inside the right panel.
