I really feel that it depends on the caliber and what YOU intend to do with the pistol or revolver.
If hunting - I'd say glass and a crosshair. If its nothing more than hitting a steel plate - then a red dot or electronic.
Another factor is the age of your eyes. Some use electronic and claim exceptional accuracy but I think its also due to the younger eyes.
Could you hit a deer for example at 50-70 yds with an electronic - perhaps, but I'd want glass and crosshair myself.
It will be interesting to hear other responses - depends on their experiences!!

i have try 2 one redfield 2.1/5 and an ultra dot ,i prefer dot
don't hunt only shoot plates

For hunting and slow fire a scope, for shooting more quickly at more moderate distances a red dot.

I consider a pistol a short range weapon anyway, 50 yards max. So the one pistol I wanted optics on was my 6" 686. I wanted quick target acquisition and reasonable accuracy. I chose to go with an open lens 1x reflex red dot sight. The sight I went with is the Ultradot L/T. I am very pleased with it. I can actually get on target quicker with it than metalic sights and get 4" groups at 50 yards. I had originally put a 2.5x scope on it and was never pleased because of slow target acquisition, exagerated shakiness and not much better groups.

I have red dots on my bullseye guns, and it makes old eyes still competitive. I do have a 4X scope on my TC in 44 Mag and a 2-7X on my .222 Rem. and 7X30 Waters.

IMO, for a handgun, red dot all the way. However, I am not steady enough to group well at 100 yards, 50 yards is the longest shot I would consider taking a deer with and that won't happen until I can shoot my 610 as well at 50 yards as I can my 617. Right now my 4 inch limit with the 610 is only 30 yards but I am working on it.

BTW, the 610 currently has an old Laseraim scope type red dot mounted on it and it's heavy as heck. Since I put a cheap reflex on the 617 I've fallen in love with reflex sights, not only are they a lot lighter, they are much easier to shoot with both eyes open. So, part of the tax return this year will go for a J Point reflex for the 610.

Ive used both and for me the dot wins out, especially if your deer hunting. You cant beat the ultra dot.

Scooter123 appears to be on track. I'm currently saving for that JPoint also. Called the factory and they advised they haven't had any issues with the 500 Smith. I really like the light weight - the sight itself is 1/2 ounce - the base shouldn't be much either - should have asked but didn't.

Hi,

I've found the red dot sights incredibly fast in bowling pin match competitions. I've found also that they are much faster in the deep Georgia deer woods where I've handgun hunted for years with my S&W .44 Magnum topped by a 1st generation Bushnell Holosight that's been on this revolver for many years now.

With the Holosights, the dot seems to magically appear on your target and you don't have to have perfect eye alignment behind the viewfinder like you do with a scope!!! Basically, if you can see the dot, that's where the bullet is going exactly!

NO MAGNIFICATION EITHER, thank goodness!!! Thus, the target appears like it does naturally, so if a deer, bear, hog, whatever is moving quickly through dense cover you can swing with the target, keep BOTH EYES open and squeeze off the round into a perfect little opening in the foliage!

Thus . . . twice in the past few years I've dropped THREE deer back to back. Once in a fresh clearcut on a ridge, and the other time in a thick bottom with three deer came down the same trail! In the clear cut, after I dropped the first one the second took off on a full run broadside. I swung and had a perfect sight picture. The deer hit the ground like someone had flipped a switch and never moved at all! Distance? I paced it off at sixty five yards. Then the third deer rose in the clear cut to check out the commotion! Ah the memories!

I also keep a Holosight on my AR-15. For fast action competitions AND for moving targets in real world situations, you can't beat a great red dot sight!

Here's a closeup of the rig, on top of the hide from a Piebald Whitetail buck I took with this set up a few years ago.

And with an 8-point buck I took with it last season . . . with a heart shot.

Another Holosight on my Ruger MkII Target pistol. Great squirrel and small game rig, and I once knocked down all six pins in a six-pin table in a bowling pin match (at the regulation 10 yards), in a blazing 2.20 sec. I've never been able to touch that time. These Holosights are "scary-quick!"

None of my Holosights have ever lost their zero either. Kind of pricey, but worth it, IMHO.
