I had a cook out last night and friends were talking and as usual guns were the subject .. A couple people wondered what would be the top defensive rifle if the AR is banned and can not be bought.

Any suggestions on what your pick would be ??

Maybe a lever action. The 30-30 compares favorably with the 7.62x39. The Marlin 336 can easily be set up with a scope or a red dot.

Or maybe the Remington 7515P .223 pump action that takes AR15 mags. It can be scoped or the rifle sights can be replaced with Trijicon RE-01 tritium night sights.

If you mean all semis with a pistol grip (like some states now), probably an M1A or thumbhole Vepr in .308. That newer rifle that's all AR until you get to the end of the receiver, where it becomes a "traditional" buttstock with a modified BCG, could be an option. I've owned a SU-16 and have fired a Mini-14 and can't recommend either one for a number of reasons...but I'd take either one over a lever .30-30 for personal defense.

If you mean all semis, period, I already have a Marlin .45/70 and a magazine fed .308 bolt action. While I don't really care for pump rifles, they are fast. My bolt gun is a Tikka and the bolt throw is very fast and smooth. There are 5 and 10 round magazines (though all are VERY expensive). If I just had to lose all the semis in a freak boating accident it would be my go-to.

What makes anyone think they'll stop at AR replicas?

Not that it is the be- and end-all of gun rights, but I see 5 out of 6 posters belong to the NRA...if you belong to the GOA, SAF or other civil rights organization instead that works too. :)

Hillary has already stated all handguns need to be banned. So expect some to get banned with a semi-auto ban, and then watch a "sporting" litmus test be applied.

Note that in the original semi-auto ban of 1994, it had a list of firearms that were exempt. The vast majority of those listed were not even semi-autos. But not one single handgun was on the exempt list. You'd think the Thompson Contender would have been exempt, but apparently there is NO such thing as a sporting handgun according to the anti's.

I'm an NRA member. I just never bothered to put their seal on my posts.

I would have to pull out all the stops.

Bad Times

NYS instituted a registration program for ARs following the Sandy Hook shooting in CT. The next step could be outright confiscation.
If that happens, I'll ship my rifle to a good friend in Wyoming.

I have no plans to take up arms against lawful authority.

A possible alternative to the AR could be the Remington 7615 pump action rifle. I believe it accepts AR type magazines.

It won't just be AR-15s that will be targeted for a ban. Most likely any attempt at a ban will be another repeat of 1994 with the bill's sponsors trying to ban a large number of firearms based on "features", and I fear those "features" will be semi-auto operation and detachable magazines. However, it is unlikely that it will in fact come to pass for a couple reasons that I won't get into as it get political.

However, if the worst case comes to pass and I have to turn in all my semi-auto rifles and pistols, I'll rely on my Model 92 in .357 Magnum. It offers 11 round capacity and is equally as effective at social shooting distances as a .30-30 lever gun, but slightly shorter and both smoother and faster cycling.

For a handgun, if all semi-auto's were banned, I'd carry my same old 3" Model 13 with .38 +P loads.
