He'd be carrying a S&W 500 with 8 3/8 inch barrel.

They'd have to change the script to read

I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire five shots or only four?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .500 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

Remake the movie? There would be too much pc nonsense in it. The original story line would not be something Hollywood could reproduce today. It would be too far off.

They would make a dirty harriet movie, but have her go after some older white dude running a company trying to starve people and destroy the environment, though.... And a 500 wielded/carried concealed by a thin model type female actress? Clint is not exactly petite and could make a large N frame seem like a realistic daily carry option...

I had the same thoughts when I saw "Dirty Harry" and "remake" in the same sentence. She would be fighting off criminals and her misogynist bosses at the same time (with more problems from the latter) and announce that when she made Chief there would be no firearms in the department until officers got in touch with their feelings and were PC in all interactions with the misunderstood good citizens commonly but erroneously referred to as "the criminal element." I guess if you want to see the ultimate spoof comedy (that isn't meant to be) you'll join me in giving this one a pass.

The model 29 being so heavy, I often wondered how he could lug that around all day. Yes, I know he had a shoulder holster, but still!

The power level of the .44 magnum was impressive in that day , and seeing cop carry one was unheard of.The 500 S&W would have a hard time on screen competing with the 50 cal Desert Eagle. The current hot loads offered in 50AE really closes the power level gap between the two rounds.Even so Hollywood down plays the power so it appears the screen star is firing a hot loaded 45 acp.As mentioned earlier the model 29 is believable to a point over the 500

Laketime I agree. A modern day Harry Callahan would most likely carry a DE or maybe a 10mm (or .45 Super) with long slide. I seriously doubt he'd carry anything with an 8-3/8 inch barrel...after all, Harry is a cool character...and there is nothing cool about an 8 inch barrel on ANY handgun LOL.

Dirty Harry.....He'd be the love of San Francisco, protecting the illegal aliens and busting camping stores for price gouging all those hippies buying tents to live in hippie city.

Very true. In fact, a present day Dirty Harry character would definitely have to relocate out of CA altogether. His style of policing would only be possible in some small Texas hick town...or the hills and hollers of Appalachia.

There are seven city employees in San Francisco that have responsibility for scooping human poop off the sidewalk in public areas. They make $70000/year. I'm thinking one of them could be featured in the new movie. The 29 replaced by a poop-scooper in a shoulder holster. Stinky Harry Callahan........

They might make it. I wouldn't see it. No matter what actor who probably knows nothing about firearms might carry. :)

I liked the remake of Lost In Space a lot, but I agree that some shows are best left as oldies.

If they remade Dirty Harry today, Callahan would rip the producer's head off, stuff his 44 down the gaping neck and shoot him through the heart and set his head back on backwards.

I'm not a diehard .44 Magnum fan; in fact, I no longer handload or shoot the cartridge. However, those cartridges larger than the .44 Magnum likely will never have the mystique or appeal of the original big bore magnum.

Probably no longer movie material anyway.

I agree with those who say that "Dirty Harry" could never be remade true to the basic "tough cop triumphing over evil despite bureaucracy" message in today's crazy mixed-up world. :o

I agree that a remake would never live up to the original. I always thought a prequel to the original had some merit, exploring how young Callahan became Dirty Harry. His kid would be ideal for that part. If they did it right, I'm sure we would all like it, but it probably would not have great commercial success these days.

Political correctness is why most movie villains these days are aliens, monsters, or rich white guys. None but the last one work in a police drama, which is one reason we see so few of them in theaters.

The TV show Blue Bloods is always catching flak for breaking this "rule."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pining for the movies where the white cops chased pimps and drug dealers of color around and blew them away. We got our fill of that trope in the 70s and 80s. But we need deep, interesting bad guys regardless of their skin tone and it's just not viable right now.

The 44 magnum was believable in Dirty Harry, but I'm have to call bull pucky on Harry carrying about a 500!
