If you could be any fictional Western character ...

I like a BIG hat.......................

Tom Mix had real cowboy skills, in spite of being from Penn.
And as I have reported before, he died in AZ driving my
favorite American exotic car, the Cord.
I would want to the High Noon Gary Cooper character.

Like someone else, I've got to go with Paladin. Former West Point graduate, great accommodations, beautiful women and deadly if crossed.

Second would be Christopher Colt from the short run series Colt .45. He was Sam Colt's nephew and he sold Peacemakers to gun shops across the west as his cover. He was actually a government agent tracking down bad guys.

Well duhhhh...

"Paladin" in the TV series Have Gun Will Travel was the "gentleman" pistolero, the "thinking man's Western hero." Played perfectly by actor Richard Boone, Paladin used his wits more than his gun, was well-schooled, erudite, and unflappable in emergencies. Always in the background was that he was a fast gun - and deadly. "It's a chess piece, the most versatile on the board. It can move in eight different directions, and is always unexpected."

Monte Walsh, Lee Marvin or Tom Seleck, both were just honest cowboys that did their job well and had fun doing it. "As long as there is one cowboy takin care of one cow it ain't dead."

I don't see how it's gets any better than Paladin. All the action, then return to a relatively modern SF and a nice Suite.

Followed by the above mentioned Jim West.

They both were choices of mine too, but will list a couple more in a bit.

Burt Lancaster's "Bill Dolworth" from The Professionals. Because most of his action was with women, he got to hang out with Lee Marvin which would be pretty cool, and he blew stuff up. He didn't seem to like shootouts, but was a great shot. Oh. And he got to see Claudia Cardinale topless.

My second choice would be Colonel Douglas Mortimer. Same MO as Shane ...

A buddy of mine hung out with Lee Marvin one night in San Francisco.
They had trouble finding a bar that would serve them. Finally one bar manager said, one drink, then you are out of here!
Lee and his friends had apparently previously caused considerable collateral damage.

Too many good choices!

First choice is Captain Jim McKay from the film The Big Country. He's everything I wish I could have been.

Lin McLean from Owen Wister's The Virginian and Lin McLean is the second choice. He has a great sense of humor, never gets hurt and gets the pretty girl in the end.

My favorite all time fictional Western character is Cat Brules from Harry Combs' Brules and The Scout. He gets too banged up though. BTW, If you haven't read these incredible books, run, don't walk to the book store and get them. Amazon sells them too.

Paladin would be another consideration but do you have any idea how hot you'd getting spending the day out in the harsh Western sun in a black hat and all black outfit? Besides, he only carried one revolver and no rifle. That would have to change.

R. J. Poteet from Centenial is another good one.

Who would you be?

I wouldn't mind being Shane. Great shot, nice threads.

In the book Shane was well dressed and unarmed when he rode up the valley. He wore a black Broadcloth suit and a brown silk shirt when he rode in and bought the farm clothes after he was hired. and he was a lot more menacing that Alan Ladd's portrayal (More like Val Kilmer's Doc holliday)

In the book Shane's gun is described

There it was the most beautiful looking weapon I ever saw. Beautiful and deadly looking... I knew enough to know that the gun was a single action Colt, the same model as the Regular Army issue...

This was the same model. But this was no Army gun. It was black , almost blue black, with the darkness not in any enamel but in the metal itself.

The grip was clear on the outer curve , shaped to the fingers on the inner curve.and two ivory plates were set into it with exquisite skill, one on each side.... It was clean and polished and oiled...I was surprised to see that the front sight was gone, the barrel smooth right down to the end, and that the hammer had been filed to a sharp point

Just about any Louis Lamour character, they all end up rich and get the girl with out even trying.

Also given the Laura Ingalls what actually pretty hot I wouldn't have minded being Almanzo Wilder

I'll say Hoppy cause no one else has. Actually though Gus from Lonesome Dove would be ideal. He and I think pretty much alike about most things. It would be extra cool if my BIL could be Woodrow. He's just as up tight and I would have a lot of fun pullin' his chain, ;)
