If You Could Only Own One Smith & Wesson… What Would It Be?

I love S&W revolvers. They are the Mercedes of revolvers. I have a gun safe with 60 revolvers in it. Narrowing it down to only one, I would have to say my K22 Outdoorsman, from 1931, and it was #182 that was shipped. Quiet, accurate, and practically like a hand made revolver. I love showing it to young people, so they can see what real quality looks like. (Beyond that, I have a K38 that I love, as well, plus several K22s, but they asked for only one. As a SHTF grab gun, though, my choice would be 586. Perfect size).

There's a lot of great Smiths out there, and I've got a few of 'em. But the one I'd pick if I could only have ONE is my everyday carry 642-1. Different choice I know... but that one's indispensable.

If you could choose just one Smith & Wesson firearm to own—whether for personal defense, fun at the range, or collecting—what would it be and why?

Would you pick a classic like the Model 29, a reliable Shield Plus, or something unique?

I’d love to hear what the community values most, as this could influence an upcoming giveaway contest! 👀

Never buy a S&W - They have bad customer service (MHO) Buy a Glock or a Ruger!

Nothing exotic or antique. Just picked up one of the new PC compact carry comp about a month ago. I love everything about this pistol. It’s quickly replacing an Sig P229 “SAS” in .40.

I set out to buy a 226 in 9mm just because of my “surgically frozen”shoulder injury makes it pretty painful as far as felt recoil goes. This gun shoots like butter. Flat and controllable. I’m about to order one of the holosun SCS optic for it.

So far I love everything about it.

I regret not buying the Smith Vietnam Era M76 9mm machine gun back when they were cheap and legal to own when brand new. This model came about because Sweden cut off sales to the U.S. Military of their excellent Carl Gustav M45. During the Vietnam war Swedish law prevented them from selling us machine guns. Admittedly the Smith version was an el-cheapo knock off but it did work reliably at least the ones I fired did.

I've had great experience with S&W Customer Service. My problem is that I had to call them in the first place. I think quality has gone down so much in the past few years it's worse than the 1980s. I look for older S&W revolvers (50s 60s 70s early 90swith light wear and have full confidence they will be working long after I am around.
