If You Could Only Own One... What Would You Choose?

No you can't! Remember you can only have 1.

Th way I read the OP's original post he appears to be saying 1 S&W.

If Paul Revere says the Red Coats are coming I will be ready.

I am a disciple of Charleton Heston and his "When they Pry my cold hands from..." speech. So in reality, just like the potato chip commercial I could not just have one, nor do I have to pick one child and sacrifice the rest.

For a theoretical discussion based on a thought turned into a question asking for one S&W to keep I think a K-22 masterpiece would work for me.

If it was a doomsday question I would carry my Sig in 40 S&W.

If I could only have one gun, it wouldnt be a S&W. If it had to be a S&W but could be anything, it wouldnt be a revolver. But if it has to be a S&W revolver, it would be a 627 Pro Series.

A 627 Pro will do anything I would ever need. I have one, and I can conceal it just fine if I need to. I can hunt anything I'd ever need/want to with it. It would be a good house gun, truck gun, mountain gun, range gun. I can feed it anything from mild to wild. It's durable and should last quite a long time. And its an 8-shot which comes in real handy if you gotta fight with it.

If I could only have one and it could be anything, it would be a 10mm Glock 20... for the exact same reasons as above but with twice the ammo available for a fight.

My choice for one S&W would be a gun S&W never built, but my gunsmith friend did. A blue steel, 45 ACP Mountain Gun.

It has a round butt so it is concealable under a garment heavier than a t-shirt. It is 45 caliber with a tapered barrel (from a Model of 1950) so despite being an N-frame it's about as light as you can get and still make it of steel. It's a 45 ACP which is the cartridge I have the most of loaded, the most brass and components for and I have a pile of full moon clips.

YMMV, but this was such an easy choice I didn't have to think about it.

No question; an early to mid 90's Model 60 chambered for .357/.38 with a 3" barrel.

Small enough to conceal easily. Plenty of stop-em power. Good accuracy. Ammo versatility. Stainless for durability.

Second choice would probably be a Model 12 in the same 3" configuration. Similar weight, but only slightly harder to conceal (larger), but you get a 6th round to make up for it.

Smith and wesson 686 cut for moon clips, spare cylinder cut for 9x23,9x19,9x18, and .380. That way you could have one gun that would take most all pistol ammo you find excluding .40 and .45. So one revolver 7 shots accept 7 different rounds. .38 .357 9x23 9x19 9x18 .380 and .38 s&w.

Wow, you've asked a question similar to 'What do you really like about your wife ? And it's turned into a survey on what's your favorite gun !

A gun is a tool, and a good tool is one that fits the job it was designed to do. I guessing you want wheel gun that has a lighter recoil because of your impending wrist problems. If you are not in to .22 LR then I'd go with any .38 special or .357 simply because of the wide range of cartridges and loads available to you. That is to say, why break your wrist if you are simply punching holes in a paper target ?

Once you've chosen the caliber for your needs the rest is easy - then find one that light enough for your wrists to handle and a barrel length that is neither too heavy to weigh you down but has an application to what you'll be doing the most. i.e. Target shooting hunting, carry, etc.
I have three 19's in various barrel lengths 2-1/2. 4, 6 " and a 686 and a snuby model 36. All great guns for their specific purpose. Find your purpose and you'll find your gun. A Smith of course !
Have a great New Year.

I think limiting one’s inventory to one S&W revolver is far too restrictive. No gun can do everything well. A CCW gun isn’t worth much as a hunting or longer ranged gun and vice versa.

If forced to choose, I guess I’d choose something like a 686 with the choice being between a 4 or 5 and a 6” barrel. Don

I saw there was a vote for the 627 Pro. I'm going to vote with that one also. 8 shots of .357 or .38 Spec. Moon clip ready. Big, yes. Heavy, yes. Not the most concealable of my revolvers, but perhaps the most versatile. I bought it for IDPA/ICORE style games, but it will certainly fill the Bill for SD and hunting chores if called upon to do so. I'm not an open carry sort of guy, but if TSHTF, it rides real nicely in an OWB holster at about 4:00.
My favorite gun right now is my STI Trojan 9mm, but for an all around piece the 627 Pro is hard to beat.
