If You Could Only Own One... What Would You Choose?

I do not own a .357 model yet but I would have guessed that would be mentioned plenty. As has been said, the ability to shoot light 38's and hot 357's out of the same gun make it a winner. On top of that, when I think of a revolver, I think of a police weapon so for me, it would be a blued four inch model.

I currently have a 29, 940, 625, and newly acquired 18. Of those, I really like my 625PC a lot. Of those I have, it would probably be the last to go. But if I were starting out today and could only have one gun, I would search out a nice Registered Magnum.

for rimfire it would be a pre-18 or 18. for centerfire it would be a 27-2 3.5" blue. fortunately i have not had to make that choice.

I'm 63yo and still loving the magnum loads in the 44mag. But I have the option of down loading it to the 44 special lead cast. We do have the option of down loading every caliber. I know someday I'll have to make changes but I have a s&w k38 combat masterpiece in 38 special waiting for me. For just owning one the k38 would be my choice.

A month or so ago I would have said my 686-3 with a 4 inch barrel. In the meantime I acquired a 681 no dash with a 4 inch barrel. It would be a hard choice but I think I'd keep the 681 over the 686. It has a nicer trigger and is just as accurate in my hands even without adjustable sights.

If I could only have one revolver. . .

Since my interests lie in self-defense more than any competition or shooting game, I would have to follow the lead of the FBI. They issue a carry gun that is more like a duty gun in size. When they issued revolvers, it was a K frame with 3 or 4 inch barrel. There is still much to commend that choice. If I could only have one, I would probably go with a 4 inch barrel. Not changing loads all the time, I could make do with fixed sights. As the round butt is preferred for concealed carry and works fine also for range shooting, I think a 4 inch round butt Model 64 would be my choice. I would get the current model as there would be fewer issues with replacement parts and it has a round butt. I would remove the internal lock in its entirety. A variety of holsters from a belt holster to an IWB would allow carry under different circumstances. Several speed loaders would complete the package.

Perhaps something like this:

For the pure enjoyment of having them, either my Mdl 586-1, 4" or my wife's nickel Mdl 36, 3" SB. The 586 is fun at the range and the 36 is just a pleasure to look at.

For daily CCW, my 360J snub.

One gun and one gun only? Simple! S&W 18-3. No need to even give it a second thought. I've been shooting one since 1983. They are wonderful in every respect. With a 18-3 on my side and in my hands I've covered countless miles in the woods and fields, fired untold multiple thousands of rounds at anything and everything that needed to be shot and made hits on targets at distances people thought stupid... until I made the hits. With this revolver I've learned and developed my abilities to shoot both single and double action. With this revolver I taught my daughters how to shoot a handgun to the point that they became and remain proficient. Yesterday I fired this revolver on a B-27E using the stages normal to qualification. It produced the typical results... 245/250. Occasionally I will shoot as high as 248/250. It is not a powerful revolver. I could not care less. It is as pretty and precise as a antique pocket watch. It is tough as a tank. It is accurate enough that I can hit oil bottles all the way out to 50 yds., and with care I can get good hits with it on out to the century mark. It is not a SD/HD/CC weapon. If I had to put it to such use, I'd do so without great concern. The reason for that lack of concern would be the simple fact that I have shot this revolver so much for so long that using it is like pointing my finger. Happily the odds of such horrific action on my part border upon the infinitesimal. As happily the costs of shooting this revolver are affordable even when .22 LR ammo is approaching $.07-.10/rd. At present I have a quantity of .22 LR ammo on hand sufficient to allow me to shoot my 18-3 at the range as well as enjoy it in the woods and fields. It doesn't take me an hour's pay to buy one box of ammunition. In fact even in today's upside down economy, an hour's pay will buy at least one brick of quality .22 LR ammo which will keep me shooting for one or maybe two days. Cool.

Only one... NEVER! But, for the sake of argument... My beloved Model 66 snubby would be the one.

Beautiful revolver 47D !

By chance have you replace the front night sight, or is it still the original?
Thanks! It's the original night sight and the tritium is pretty faint. I haven't found anyone offering replacement vials or sights yet.

I must be simple. If I could only have one, it would be one that I've never had, either a 4" - 27 or 4" - 28. I have a 6" 28 and love the heft of the frame and feel but 6" is just too clumsy for me to pack around.

OMG, what a question! I've got a 67, a 27, a 14, a 15, a 29, a 25......etc. A .22, a .38, a .357, a .45, a .44.....etc. (And some several of each).

So, OK the house is on fire and I have only 1 hand. No question, the K-22 would be the first out the door.

Silver78; Well pilgrim if you mean one S&W revolver you are asking a lot.

My favorite one is a 27-2 3.5", I have others but common sense tells me that Gypsmjim is on a good track.

I guess I'd keep my 1950's K-22 Masterpiece and my Python.
