I just ordered one this week. A 10 shot 617 as well as a 5" 460V. I can't wait for them to arrive to keep my 610 company. :)

Regards,

Chizzy

i know how "holy" those 617's can be.....they sure do make those paper targets "holy"

Going to a big gun show tomorrow. A 617 is high on my list of "must haves". Hopefully I will have one in my possession when I leave.

I bought mine a couple months ago. Neighbor liked it so well he bought one. I've put Wolff spring kits in both and we have stoned polished and buffed the innerds.

i swear if i ever have a chance to buy a no lug 617 i'll probably go stupid and pay whatever they want for it :) those are great looking guns...

How are the new 10 shot 617's? I know they have a Steel cylinder now. I was thinking of buying one and then sending it to S&W for an action job and getting some nice grips for her... Any imput would be great!

Thanks - Will

I just found mine on Gunbroker last week. 617-2 with the Stainless cylinder. Looked long and hard for a pre-lock 617 as I am anal about somebody drilling a hole in the side of a perfectly good gun! Best $600 I ever spent:D:D:D

Mines a 6 shot no dash version but all the posts up here on the 10 shot Model 617 the people who have bought them all about them.

So, is it worth looking for a early 617 or shall I buy a new one( 10 shot) for 670? I heard the old alloy cylinders where not that great. Also, what about sending her to SW for a smith job?

Also, one other odd ball question? Could they ever fit a .22 Magnum cylinder to the gun? Could be expensive from what I have heard, but would be kind of neat I guess. Looking for some imput for some Board regulars. All my years collecting Smiths and I just joined this board! I love it!

I've heard of a few problems with the newer 617's across the internet gun forums. Just hearsay I guess but I intentionally waited until a six shot came my way. I've handled both and the earlier 617's seem better built.

And you probably won't need a trigger job on an older 617. Might save some money by buying an older one. If you can find one.

But that's just me.
