I read somewhere that the most common weapon in pre-gunpowder times was a spear. That is what I picked. A big knife on the belt as added insurance would not be bad as well.

I voted for the long sword. If it worked for my Norman ancestor Hugh de Lacy who am I to question it. Apparently pretty effective for dispatching uncooperative Saxons and French heretics. Of course locking the heretics in a building and setting it on fire also worked real good too.
2nd choice.
I have a bloodthirsty pet rabbit for a sidekick as well.
Beats a large wooden rabbit any day.

The Woomera is also known as an Atlatl. By effectively making your throwing arm longer it gives you more leverage to dramatically increase the speed and force of your throw.

Realistically, most people who carried a weapon in the old days would probably have more than one............ A bowman would likely have a good dagger as well or even a short sword. A man might have a spear as his main weapon but carry an axe, sword or dagger as well. Roman troops most often went into battle with a short sword and shield but also carried one or more light throwing spears. Spears which were designed to stick into an opponents shield and bend making it hard to remove and weighing the enemies shield down causing it to be less useful or even discarded.
At minimum most would have some type of belt knife or dagger always at hand. The choice of a heavier or longer range weapon would depend on their circumstances and perceived need............ And that would be just as true for a modern person somehow transferred to ancient times or conditions as it was for those who lived in the olden days. The skill to use some of those weapons properly would have to be learned if you weren't already familiar with the use of primitive weaponry.

I think we the next victim of blunt trauma.....
Medical Examiner: It appears the victim suffered death caused by severe head trauma to the head from a blunt object. A biscuit found near the body had hair and blood that matched that of the victim.
My second pick was a slingshot, which wasn't a popular choice, but I believe with the proper sized biscuit it would be lethal.

Excellent balance, durability, amazing metallurgy, easily CCW (try that with a spear, broad sword or claymore - nope open carry). Plus difficult to kill ninjas and those green turtle guys, right?

I am surprised the list did not include a Bowie Knife or the equivalent. That would be my choice.
