If you were starting a Smith Collection what would be your first 10 guns..

I already have a bunch of Smiths. And, I'm not a collector, I'm a "WANTER". So here's my list and they're nothing exotic or rare but just what I would like to have. As funds become available, I think I will be able to "collect" most of them.

Md. 13
Md. 25
Md. 28
Md. 40
Md. 64
Md. 65
Md. 66
Md. 67
Md. 1006
Md. 3913

Here's my list, but it's not fancy:

Model 10-5 (4 inch and 2 inch)
Model 13-4 (3 inch)
Model 28-2 (4 inch)
Model 36
Model 60 (2 inch)
Model 60-14 (2 inch IL)
Model 64-2 (2 inch)
Model 66-2 (4 inch)
Model 317
Model 637
Model 640 Centennial
Victory U.S. Navy model
Governor (IL)
6906
Model 15-22

GOOD?

For me, not being accustomed to money is no object, or having the depth of knowledge of many here. I would go with revolvers only, most blued, all with nice wood grips, representing all frame sizes & most calibers as possible without IL's & no dash's. Trying to include 2 J frame hammerless snubs a humpy & a 640, a model 10, mdl 29, 681, a RM, a combat masterpiece , a K-22, a couple of N frame big bores 10mm, 45lc, I ran out. I guess the early 9mm Chiefs special would be in the 2nd 10 along with the bottom feeders.

Great list! Never say never!!! Hunt!!!

This is a great thread. It's interesting to see the lists of others and compare to what is in my toy box. Most of what I would list has been mentioned many times. Unless I've missed them 2 that I have but haven't seen listed and would buy again are a 40 Centennial and 52-2. The 52-2 is a recent acquisition for me but the craftsmanship to me is what represents the best of S&W.

There are a lot of great suggestions but I think you need to ask what will be the focus of your S&W collection? Is it to acquire a group of great shooters, a representative of various revolvers of different frame sizes, S&W models that changed history, stay focused on models of one frame size, various semi autos, performance center guns or try to complete a specific model through it's manufacturing history or a sub-set like pre-war or early production. I believe you could come up with a list within each category and have a neat little group or use the many suggestions already offered. It is all in what really interests you, what will make this hobby fun and interesting.

I started out bullseye shooting and liked Model 41's and Model 52's. Than got bit by the Model 29's and than all S&W 22's.

Hi Bob,

The focus in this case is what represents the best of Smith and Wesson and which of the finest examples would be your first 10 firearms. If they are all K frames terrific but are there 10 of finest examples of the best SW has build within the K frame line? Does the same go for N frames of J Frames?

This was my earlier list off the top of my head:
1. K22 Outdoorsman early first year if possible Complete 99%
2. K32 - First Model if possible Pre-War
3. Model 19 3" or any model 19 K frame of choice
4 Model 22 1950
5. Baby Chief
5 Model 11-4
6 Triple Lock
7 Reg Mag
8 Pre 27
9 Perfected
10. pre 29 with case

Let's try a new one and see if it is a better example and eliminate all of my first choices..
1.38/44 heavy barrel
2. Model 3 44 Russian
3.1891 in a case with interchangeable part options
4. Any Gustave Young engraved (Schofield would be nice)
5. Any .22 or 32 HE 4"
6. Any .38 two inch
7. 44 HE 2nd Model
8. Model 28-2 4"
9. Nickel Victory
10. K38

Interesting question, difficult to answer. I normally list what I want but don't have access to it... and it's a long list!!!

Off the top of my head:

3" M13
3" M65 Ladysmith
4" CS-1
5" M27
4" M624
.45 Colt MG pre-lock
.41 Mag MG pre-lock
.44 Mag MG pre-lock
5" M29 Classic DX
7.5" M29 MagnaClassic

And that's just for starters. Definitely to shoot. Wouldn't mind a 4" K22/M17 either... I prefer older handguns not the modern crop of sanitized economy class weapons, they built them better in days gone by. I haven't started on semi-autos either...

One of my buddies living on the dark side (Colt collector). We are traveling together next week and doing the Tulsa run. Specifically the trip is all about Smith and Wesson so the hang will be with the the SMCA/Forum guys that will allow us passage. David Carroll has been given a task of finding at least one very fine SW for my good friend who for the moment we will call respectfully Mr. Newbie.. I am very curious to see what exactly DC comes one up with . Like all thinks I can give suggestions (you all have); however one specimen has to be available in order to buy.. I will keep you all posted..
