If you woke one morning and society had collapsed

To be honest, I'd fix breakfast and do a quick inventory of my wife's meds. Some meds are about impossible to obtain extra of so you can stock up on them.

Otherwise, we live in the city, too far from the places I want to be before this happens. We're bugging in with the dogs and things we can store. And defending this place would suck about as much as traveling through town to get out.

I'd turn on the ham radio and try to get a sense of what was happening as I loaded my rifles.

I'm a ham also, and one of the things I'm considering to prepare for extended power outages is coming up with a solar panel system to supply power to recharge my 2 meter handhelds and run my 100 watt HF ricebox.

A few solar panels and a deep cycle battery or two would probably do the trick. Perhaps a small gas generator for backup.

Not bugging out. Bugging in. Fill the bathtubs with water. Everything else is already here, or it never will be.

About the gun? Too late - I already have more than one.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question. If I had to leave, I'd probably take a 2" 15, a 37, some ammo, maybe a BHP some 9mm ammo, and maybe a collapsible EBR with about 500 rd of 223. Or maybe a fixed-stock EBR with about 400 rd of 308. But you said collapse of society, and I'm not moving into that, away from everything useful that I have.

I am home and remaining here until dead and gone.
The refugees from cities had better relocate now and not plan on moving to the "COUNTRY" last minute.
We don't want or need greenhorn problems and will not tolerate such.
So do I sound like a hard case , maybe.

If things got as bad as many here suggest then there would be no electricity, no fuel, no clean water, and just about every other common daily necessity. How many people living in the Northern climates could survive without heat? Not to mention no medications, & no 911 that most people turn to for help in a crisis. Everyone today is almost totally dependent on cell phones and that would probably be the first service to be shut down, causing a major catastrophic panic by itself!

Yep... it will weed out half or more of the population quickly!!

Which is probably a good thing!

PHP:
Only one gun? Nah, that's unrealistic. :p

A more fun game to play is how many guns and how much ammo can be carried for a given weight limit--say 10 pounds. Or 15. Even when counting pounds, there's still room to toss an Airweight Snubby in a pocket.

OK, that's a NAA in 22 short and umpteen boxes of 22 short ammo.

You would be well protected if angry hamsters rose up to take the place of human society.

:)

This thread is like a squirrel preparing for winter....look at all the nuts it has gathered up....:p

I enjoy perusing these threads as the participants tend to distribute into either Grasshoppers or Ants.

Aesop was a pretty smart fellow.

AK pistol is my choice, bugging in or out. Reliable, scary-looking, compact, powerful.
