Ha
I am already thinking how to best cover the lesion. Was leaning towards a titanium plug to match the like colored pins. Where would one find that latch?

They are great guns and that's a good price these days. Just don't clean the face of the cylinder with anything other than a toothbrush and if shooting .357's in it go with 158 grain or higher. Helps stop cylinder face erosion issues.

Thanks. Good advice. That's how I currently clean and feed my other Ti cylinder smiths. I'll likely only carry +P

I have great disdain for the lock and won't purchase a new S&W revolver with it. Used, however, is a different story since the company isn't making money off of the sale IMO. I'd just have to buy an aftermarket plug kit, and I'd probably only take the plunge if a Model 619 or 620 popped up.

I went through all the wailing and gnashing of teeth with a 3" 686-6+ TALO but installed the plug and now there is peace throughout the land. It's too heavy to carry around so it now resides in a cubby hole in the kitchen for emergencies. It's the only one I own with that IL but it serves it's purpose.

A quick Google brought up the company Tromix, which offers that latch at around $30.00. I can't comment on quality, functionality, etc...

Dang, that sure looks like a nice one! I would probably have bought it, too, and I need another handgun like… well, pick your own favorite epithet. :D When I was looking for one, I never saw one with the red ramp, which is the version I preferred.

Congratulations on the new .357. Let us know more when you've had the chance to fire it. :)

I have one of those thumb pieces, for the very same day when I can no longer avoid the temptation of a scandium/titanium combo.

I bet it carries fantastically, congrats!

Original Precision and TK Customs both make internal lock plugs for S&W revolvers (in several different finishes) for about $40.

I only have a few "modern" revolvers with the infamous lock...2-5/8" PC 627-5, 1-7/8" 642-2, and 3" 686-6 Plus. So far I've been able to ignore the internal lock (and I never use it!), but I may plug a couple of my revolvers sometime in the near future.

BTW: By picking up that 386PD, you've got a tiger by the tail! There's a reason that it was "cherry" and reasonably priced...those Sc/Al frame and Ti cylinder revolvers kick like an Army mule! I had a used one for about a year (with aluminum carry case, etc.) because I thought the 7-shot lightweight revolver would be an excellent EDC. I am not recoil averse (I routinely shoot .44 Magnums and hot .357 Magnums in heavier frame revolvers), but that little L-frame was too much for me. There was too much recoil to allow for fast follow up shots, and it just plain hurt my hands. I hope that it works out for you because they are cool revolvers. Enjoy!

Thanks Hawg
I have/had several of the scandium/titanium revolvers from Smith and I am familiar the beast that lives within these gems. :)
I had no reservations buying my 342PD, 396 and 296 because they don't have the lock, but my 4'' 500 and 329 did and both are gone; not solely because of the lock, but because I no longer had a need for them. The plug is a clean fix for one hole, but it creates another hole left by removal of the flag. Replacing the latch seems like the best option.
