Two weeks ago, we had a bad ice storm here in the mountains, with lots of tree limbs tearing down power, phone and worst of all-my Internet connection. The power was out for 3 1/2 days the first time and a 1/2 day the second time. My 5K generator died after about 3 hours and I had to rent one.

About 10 minutes ago, the Net was FINALLY restored. Y'all may not have missed me, but I sure missed this Forum!

I'm sure I have lots of catching up to do.

Muley Gil,

Have you considered subscribing to a Mobile Hot Spot on your smart phone? If you lost cell service with power it wouldn't help, but if you were where you had cell service, anywhere in the country, you could use the internet. I have had it for years because we used to travel often and we could pay our bills on-line and such no matter where we were.

For some reason I sometimes lose my internet connection at home for sometimes a few minutes, sometimes hours often it is Sunday night for some reason. Then I can still get on the S&W forum or whatever else on the 'net using my mobile hot spot.:D

Welcome back, out of curiosity was it a new generator gone bad right out of the box or an older well worn unit? I've heard stories about newly installed machines going sour with short hours.

I bought my Chinese built Champion in 2010. I've had a few repairs during the last 12 months. It has a lot of hours on it.

My mechanic buddy is replacing the coil tomorrow. It wasn't putting out any spark.

Thanks for the "welcome back" comments. :)

You were gone?

Out here in the boonies, without Wi-Fi, I MAY get a very weak signal if I take the phone into the kitchen and lay it on the sink, facing the window.

I'm so fur back in the hills, even the Presbyterians handle snakes. :D

Welcome back! I feel for you. We live in the country and the first 10 years we never had an outage, but since then we have had several. The worst one we were down for about 5 days. We've got a portable generator but only does the basics. Gives us lights and runs a refrigerator and powers the TV. It takes forever to stop reaching for the wall switch when walking into a dark room. And, almost the worst part is losing the internet.

A few years back, I had a transfer switch installed in my breaker box. I cut off the main & go to the generator circuit. I can power the well and all of the 120 volt outlets. I turn off the water heater and don't use the oven.

The generator is in the detached garage, 85 feet away, so no worries about CO. I run a power cord from the Champion to the house.

The longest stretch without power was 7 days, back in the summer of 2012. I had the 5K generator but only had a 120 line. Went down to the creek to get water for toilet flushing.

Sure we missed you! Who’d you say you were, again? :o

Just kidding! :D Sorry to hear of your troubles. At least you had temporary power. Everything I have depends on electricity. I’ve been thinking of a whole-house generator, but will have to have an LP tank. Don’t really want one of those sitting around, but…

Anyway, welcome back onboard.
