I am so happy that my wife and I will be moving out of our apartment into a house in the next month or so. We have lived in this apartment for more than 3 years now, and have seen a slew of neighbors come and go from the upstairs apartment, and none have ever bothered us, until the woman and her son moved in upstairs. This woman is about 30's or so, and the kid is five. Her parents and family happen to live in the house next door, and they come and go at all hours, all the time.
The five year old kid, is a handful to say the least. He runs around at all hours of the day and well into the hours at night (usually midnight or so) before the mom either gets him in bed or shoots him with a tranquilizer dart. The wife has had to keep an eye on our clothes in the dryer, because gum has mysteriously showed up more than once (neither my wife or I even chew gum).Tonight, around 6 or so, I was vacuuming (ok let the comments begin) when I suddenly hear a loud BANG BANG BANG BANG. I stopped to try and figure out what it was, apparently either the mother or the kid was very much objecting the vacuuming. Someone was either stomping or jumping up and down right over my head. Just the other day, the landlady, who has been very nice asked how it was, and I told her that it wasn't too bad, just a bit noisy every so often. Her husband's response, "Well what do you want you live underneath a five year old?" Personally i will be very happy when I leave here, because the landlady wants to sell the house, while her husband seems determined to keep the place, which is slowly beginning to fall apart. (Trees came down finally after they started splitting, taking part of the chimney out with it). THe roof is shot, and the plumbing is starting to get suspect. If I can just hang on for another month or so. I have been having a very hard time from setting up adhesive so the kid gets stuck at the top of the stairs and can't move.

I'm glad you are out of there Dave, Are you going to buy a house or rent one? There ought to be a law that apartments can only be constructed out of concrete>

We bought a house, with one neighbor about 300 yards on one side, 2 miles or so on the other, and 6 acres of woods behind me. Its about time we got some peace and quiet.

I can relate. The first house my wife and I bought was great except for the big house next door that had been turned into apartments. The guy in the corner apartment had the fattest, ugliest girlfriend. When she came over to visit they would go into his apartment and lock the door leaving her 2 little nosepickers outside. They would get into everything and took great joy in pulling down my stack of firewood. One day I got a wild hair while cleaning out my dogs pen and shoveled all of the dog crap right in front of the firewood rack. I still had room between the rack and my house to get to the wood so this presented no problem for me. Well the nosepickers came over later and did their usual attack on my firewood. Their mother came outside, took one look and a sniff, then screamed "what have you got all over you"? The nosepickers said "just mud". The mother stomped back into the house muttering 'it doesn't smell like mud". LMAO

Lyrics from an old Paul Simon tune, "One man's ceiling is another man's floor".

Last Apt I lived in, I was on the top floor and on a corner. My "Under neighbor" came up one night and complained, rightfully, about the TV's volume. He asked, after complaining, "Was I hard of hearing?" My response, rightfully, was yes. Another priceless look

.. I did try to remember to keep it down..

Also FWIW, this was in MI and my gas bill was 1/3 - 1/4th of the neighbors below me... Heat rises.

You'll have a-hole neighbors anywhere you go. At least that's been my experience. The only difference is that my neighbors have to get in a vehicle and drive here to argue with me. It still happens.

If I could con the wife into it, I'd sell the house & buy a nice 40ft boat, and live on it. You never have to put up with screwball neighbors. If you don't like it, just move to another marina. My idea of heaven.

I heard the state is putting in a four lane highway on the one side of you with a twelve foot concrete wall. The road by the way leads to the new airport that is going to be built one mile away.

Ah yes, home ownership.

Congrats, really.

Our closest neighbor is 200 yds. Our son didn't like yard work so as soon as he finished college he ran away from home and got an apartment. With people above and below he lasted about a month. He bought a house on a 1/2 acre. He lives closer to neighbors than where he was reared but at least they are not above and below. I and his mother like to remind him how it is better to mow a yard than live in an apt. He just grins and bears. Larry
