Check it out for yourselves. I've seen some things on this, but I haven't checked out the original source much to get away from media twist.

A conservative lady blogger has been rewriting fairy tales and the NRA has them on their family website (that I didn't even know existed). Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. I even saw some animations but I didn't see them on the NRA website. I've got to look more into this.

I've been wanted the NRA to put a positive face on it's mission and philosophy of responsible gun ownership and safety. But this isn't quite what I had in mind.

My first thought was, "Aw come on. Don't target children. Make ads and educational material showing proper gun use and ownership." I think this is going to start a storm of controversy, which I'd like to avoid.

ANYWAY. I read the stories and I was surprised to get the message. It seemed to me they were saying,"Instead of being afraid, be prepared." It's kinda funny...

Red Riding Hood tells the wolf to back off, raising her rifle. The wolf heads for Grandma's house to set a trap. He muscles in the door, but Grandma distracts him while moving toward her shotgun to defend herself. She's still afraid but Red arrives and she and Granny hold the wolf until hunters arrive and take him off.

I thought this might be horrible but right now I'm kind pleased at how the stories were done.:D:):D:)

Links are so nice in a post like this.

I found nrafamily.org, but I could not find any fairy tales.

JMHO But...Children are very impressionable. How many times has Elmer Fudd shot Daffy Duck with no ill effects? Can we really expect young children to be able to differentiate between animation and real life?

Again......

I really want to see educational spots on TV and media aimed adults and young adults (say teenagers) that have a positive message and emphasize realistic gun safety and responsible ownership and handling in recreational shooting, hunting or self/home defense. There's nothing wrong with early indoctrination of gun safety to small children but there's a lot more too it than just saying , "properly used guns can save your life'. I want to see what safety and responsibility really entails, not just that 'properly used guns can save your life'. When to use guns, different types of guns. Having guns around children. Actual safety demonstrations of safe handling and why. What causes accidents. THAT is more important to me than telling small children why guns are good.
Make it similar to those programs where a friendly guide tells you how to fish. Those programs can cover basics and appeal to all ages by not talking down on them.

I believe that programs like this would appeal even to people that don't necessarily use guns and even those who oppose guns but are reasonable enough to realize that gun education is good for everybody. It can even bring in converts by familiarization rather than mystique about black guns, assault weapons etc.

That is my stance. What the NRA is doing isn't bad, maybe even good. But they can do a LOT more with the resources they have. Lobbying is necessary, but the need for extensive lobbying would be less if more people are at least comfortable and more accepting of guns.

I don't know where you are living but do your really expect to see ANYTHING positive about firearms, shooting and children in the media? The medias agenda is to make sure firearms are portrayed in a negative manner and children are made afraid of firearms. If the youth is made to hate firearms, then there will be less people who want to have them in the future.

RW, I agree with you 100% but wonder if NRA could even purchase the airtime? As Bill ssid, the MSM has a predetermined agenda based on the whims of their handlers and masters that is directly at odds with your position. I doubt they would allow NRA to get their message out at any price.

For years the "Little Red Riding Hood" fairy tale as told by Jimmy to his kids and grandchildren has Little Red Riding Hood carrying a .45 in a shoulder holster and "double tapping" the bad wolf when he threaten her.

*** a hand gun is a better choice when picking berries than a long gun as the hand gun leaves both hands free for picking.

QUESTION: would a .45 be a better choice for Ms. Hood than a smaller or larger caliber ??

Good story rewrite. Emailed link to all my buddies who in the past 5 years have rethought why they didn't need guns for personal and home defense, and are now avid shooters and NRA members.

FWIW, the media is already slanting this as very inappropriate according to the article that I read. There is a segment of our society that does not want an armed population. Historically, the difference between slaves and a free population has been firearms.

I saw a commercial the other day that stated that 600,000 people die each year from varicose veins. That works out to 1,643 deaths per day or 60 Sandy Hooks every day of the year.

Where is the outrage??? Why are we not banning varicose veins?

Sandy Hook was a great american tragedy and in no way am I trying to make light of it, but let's be fair. It's not about the guns, it's about control.

Yes, I know I see gun shows on cable channel.

Cable channels have shows about guns, but it's usually of historical nature. There are some cable channels that would gladly pick this up and if done properly others may follow suit. Not the big networks, they won't touch it, until the shows gets shows itself profitable, but for the main networks, not even then.

I think assuming that no one will air it or watch it is is being too negative . There are people that would want to see this especially if it is well done and positive. And I bet people that don't use guns would be willing to try after seeing what there is to it.

They sure show enough guns on police and detective shows now. INTEREST in guns is high, guns are selling and I think the time is right for something like this and the NRA SHOULD support it. They are missing the boat if they don't. The idea is to put a good face on the NRS in a way that people can appreciate and possibly learn something from.

Show people how to store guns when kids are around like with quick opening safes. There are tons of subjects people need to know about whether they are pro or anti.

I'll bet people that make and sell safes and other safety gear would even sponsor it.

We need to counter the negative press that tellls people to hate gun. No reason to keep sitting by and watching them do it. Take action.

I think so. My kids/g-kids played with, pointed at and shot each other with play guns but when holding a real gun (even a BB gun) are muzzle conscious and practice safety pretty good. They're your normal kids though and need to be taught and then monitored until they're old enough and responsible enough to be on their own.

These re-writes obviously were written to make a point. I think the stories are cute and can serve as a catchy way to make that point with kids old enough to get it.

I don't think anyone, not even the most hard-core gun rights parent, is going to raise their kids and send them off to pre-school believing this is the original version of Little Red Riding Hood.

I also don't think you're going to get a lot of anti-gun parents to embrace these versions, or find them in schools unless they're private and you're running them.

But I think they are a creative addition to the debate. And they make good practical points about guns without just throwing out the same arguments again.

And if media coverage is largely negative, surprise! But people will at least hear about the stories and seek them out. That's a step.
